Next generation Appliance -- to Be Showcased at Microsoft TechEd Conference in San Diego -- Taps ISA Server Features to Enhance Security for Microsoft Exchange Servers and Remote Microsoft Outlook Users

Network Engines, Inc., (Nasdaq:NENG), a development, manufacturing and distribution partner for security and storage software vendors and network equipment providers, announced today that it will deliver an appliance based on Microsoft Internet and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004 to provide enhanced security for corporate email systems.

The next generation Firewall for Microsoft Exchange Server will be demonstrated at the Microsoft TechEd 2004 conference in San Diego May 23-28. Designed specifically to help protect Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 and 2003, the firewall appliance extends the advanced security features in Microsoft ISA Server 2004, providing an easy to use and manageable solution to help customers contend with increasingly sophisticated attacks against Exchange environments. Microsoft ISA Server 2004, part of Windows Server System, is an advanced application layer firewall, VPN and Web cache software solution that enables customers to easily maximize existing IT investments by improving network security and performance.

"ISA Server 2004 has been optimized to help protect Microsoft applications, such as Exchange and Outlook Web Access (OWA). We are extending the advanced protection and ease of use features of ISA Server 2004 to provide customers with a powerful yet simple-to-deploy and manageable appliance solution for securing the Exchange Server as well as remote email connections to the network," said John Curtis, president and CEO at Network Engines. "The Firewall for Microsoft Exchange Server appliance is a must-have for any enterprise that depends on the Exchange Server as its communication lifeline."

"Customers have told us they need effective solutions to help protect messages, calendars, and folders with Microsoft Outlook Web Access," said Jonathan Perera, senior director of product management for Microsoft's Security Business and Technology Unit. "The next generation Firewall for Exchange Server appliance will offer a new option to help customers protect their e-mail systems against new and emerging threats."

The next generation Firewall for Microsoft Exchange Server is managed by Network Engines' NEWS(TM), a secure XML-based browser interface, featuring headless management and remote software updates.

Benefits of the Network Engines Firewall for Microsoft Exchange Server include:

-- Augments the defense already provided by enterprise and perimeter firewalls as today's viruses and worms find ways through the perimeter

-- Helps secure the Exchange Server from both internal as well as external threats

-- Application filtering of all Exchange supported protocols, including Microsoft RPC-MAPI

-- Intrusion detection for application layer attacks such as port scans and SYN flood attacks

-- Provides a security-enhanced alternative to VPN, enabling more- secure functionality of the Outlook client

-- Easily deployed and simple to maintain using Network Engines NEWSdesk(TM)

-- Remote updates provided by NEWSupdate(TM) administration tools.

"The Firewall for Microsoft Exchange Server delivers cost-effective, tangible, immediate benefits," said Mike Riley, vice president of sales, marketing and strategy for Network Engines. "It is designed specifically to help protect a mission-critical application, Exchange, while also offering full remote access to the features and functionality of Microsoft Outlook without the need for costly VPN solutions."

The Network Engines Firewall for Microsoft Exchange Server appliance is on display at booth 1138 and SP6 during Microsoft Tech Ed 2004, May 23-28.
