ATX Communications, a leading provider of integrated communications and managed security services, has been selected to provide critical network services in support of Wireless Philadelphia, the Company announced today. Through its new relationship, ATX is helping enable one of the first major U.S. cities to connect residents, businesses, schools, communities and visitors through a wireless city-wide Internet network.
In October, Philadelphia Mayor John F. Street announced that Atlanta-based Internet service provider EarthLink (NASDAQ: ELNK) won the City's bid to develop and implement the nation's largest municipal Wi-Fi broadband network. Now, EarthLink has selected ATX to provide crucial network access in support of the project. Expected to be fully operational later this year, Wireless Philadelphia will turn the country's fifth largest city into its largest Wi-Fi hotspot, helping to improve education, enhance neighborhood development, and reduce the costs of government.
"ATX is proud to join EarthLink in bringing the innovative 'Philly Wi-Fi' initiative to life," stated Jeff Coursen, ATX Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. "This unique opportunity to help EarthLink deliver the infrastructure to assist in bridging the digital divide lets us give something back to the city that has been our company's home for more than two decades."
ATX has a long history of serving some of Philadelphia's most notable institutions including the City of Philadelphia, Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Stock Exchange, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and, most recently, the Philadelphia Zoo. In addition, ATX's commitment to delivering technology and expertise is evidenced by several recent acknowledgements including Best Customer Service Organization at the American Business Awards and Product of the Year, awarded by Communications Solutions magazine.
