Toshiba Enhances Mobile Computing Displays Product Portfolio With Addition of 12.1-Inch WXGA LCD for Notebook PCs
Posted on: Tuesday, 25 May 2004, 06:00 CDT
SEATTLE, May 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Further expanding its portfolio of innovative, high-performance display solutions for the mobile computing market, Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today announced it has introduced a 12.1-inch wide-format polysilicon thin film transistor (TFT) wide XGA (1280 x 768) liquid crystal display (LCD) for primary use in notebooks PCs and other portable computing devices. Developed by Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Co., Ltd. (TMD)**, the new display will be revealed and demonstrated at the 2004 Society for Information Display (SID) International Symposium, Seminar & Exhibition in Seattle, Washington, held May 25-27, 2004.
The new 12.1-inch WXGA module, designated LTD121EX1S, combines high brightness with excellent resolution and a wide-format viewing area. These specifications, along with the unit's high pixel density and small packaging, make the display especially useful to users who rely on smaller, full-featured notebooks for enhanced image content viewing and productivity capabilities. A device equipped with the new LCD may display two document pages side by side, or open more windows within the notebook's desktop, and yet be ultra-portable due to the module's small form factor and high resolution image content.
"With the introduction of this new 12.1-inch WXGA high-resolution, wide format module, TMD is taking another demonstrative step to increasing the breadth and depth of its display portfolio specifically targeted at mobile computing environments," said Steve Vrablik, business development director for LCDs at TAEC. "TMD's wide-format displays with are extremely well suited for an extensive array of portable computing and consumer electronics applications. These include notebooks PCs with spreadsheet, publishing, and other software, in which users need to display more information on a single screen for increased efficiency and utility with remarkable clarity."
The unit features a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels, an active viewing area of 10.36 x 6.21 inches (263.04 x 157.82 millimeters [mm]), and a contrast ratio of 600:1. The display weighs only 250 grams (g), and features a single cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) backlight system achieving a luminance of up to 250 cd/m2. The new display also offers a high-resolution pixel density of 124 pixels per inch (ppi) for increased image sharpness and clarity, and consumes only 4.8 watts at 250 cd/m2, a low power level essential for users of ultra-mobile computing applications. The very high contrast ratio, coupled with the module's high brightness and excellent image quality, also makes this LCD an ideal solution for the playback of wide-format DVDs on mobile notebook PCs.
