Siemens Communication Networks All Set to Thrive in Asia Pacific

Posted on: Tuesday, 25 May 2004, 06:00 CDT

May 26--Siemens Information and Communication Networks (ICN) says it is ready to expand further in the Asia-Pacific telecom market, one of the fastest growing markets in the world.

Underscoring its commitment to the region, Siemens ICN established a regional headquarters in Kuala Lumpur in January. The office has more than 100 staff serving 22 countries in the region. Overall, Siemens ICN has more than 4,000 staff in the region.

"The establishment of the regional headquarters in Kuala Lumpur not only eliminates the time barrier between continents but also allows us more flexibility in responding to the customers' needs," said Christian Onselaere, executive vice-president and head of ICN for Siemens in Thailand.

Another major initiative is the company's 40 percent investment in Dasan Networks Inc., a Korean network specialist in Ethernet-based access products.

According to market researchers' forecasts, the access segment of carrier networks will change dramatically in the coming years and the use of Ethernet equipment will increase. An IDC report shows that sales of such equipment will grow to more than US$6 billion in 2008. The driving forces are the decline in prices for Ethernet access products and the increase in broadband applications.

The Dasasn partnership enables Siemens to offer Ethernet solutions and efficient network management that lowers the cost of network operation.

Siemens also reaffirmed its string interest in Thailand in terms of physical infrastructure, products and services, human resources, and financial stability. "Our accomplishment and growth in the country to date underlines our strategies and our strong belief in the Thai market," said Mr Onselaere.

"Besides the country's favourable economic outlook, the progress in telecommunication regulation, the various government initiatives such as IT City, one million broadband lines, e-government, e-commerce, and other e-initiatives will raise investment in the country's ICT infrastructure."
