Activists: Scientist Stops Animal Studies

Posted on: Monday, 7 August 2006, 15:00 CDT

An animal-rights group said Monday a researcher told them he will stop conducting animal studies due to their campaigns against him.

The Animal Liberation Front said it received an e-mail message from Dario Ringach, a researcher at the University of California at Los Angeles, pledging to cease his experiments that involved macaque monkeys.

The e-mail message began, You win, according to ALF's press office. Although no reason was expressly stated, the correspondence asked that his name be removed from Web sites exposing his atrocities, and asked that his family be left alone, the press office stated.

Ringach did not respond to a request for confirmation from United Press International.

Animal-rights advocates had conducted protests at Ringach's home and distributed leaflets to his neighbors about his research.

Activists claiming to be members of ALF took credit last month for leaving a Molotov cocktail at the home of another UCLA researcher, Lynn Fairbanks, who also conducts experiments that involve monkeys. The incendiary device apparently was left at the wrong home, however. The FBI is investigating the incident.
