Occam Networks Completes Product Interoperability Testing With Siemens Softswitch; Products Interoperate Via MGCP to Enable Service Providers to Directly Deploy VoIP to Subscribers

Posted on: Monday, 14 August 2006, 15:00 CDT

Occam Networks Inc. (OTCBB:OCNW), a supplier of innovative Ethernet and IP-based loop carrier equipment to telecommunications companies worldwide, announced today that they have completed interoperability testing of the Occam BLC 6000 System broadband loop carrier (BLC) with the Siemens(R) SURPASS(R) hiQ 8000 softswitch.

The two products interoperate via the Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP), a client-server protocol that provides a direct IP connection between the Siemens SURPASS hiQ 8000 softswitch and the Occam BLC in distributed network architecture. Using MGCP rather than GR-303 or TR-08 provides more control over subscribers and saves service providers facilities cost; equipment cost and reduces transport cost. An IP-based network enables telecommunications service providers to deliver next-generation services such as voice over IP (VoIP) to subscribers more efficiently and cost-effectively reducing capital expenses, as well as operating expenses.

"It is crucial to our customers' continued success that we conduct interoperability testing with as many products as possible, particularly with key softswitch providers like Siemens," said Russ Sharer, vice president of sales and marketing for Occam Networks. "By certifying product interoperability in advance we make it easier for our customers to make important purchase decisions, as well as reduce the time it takes for them to design and install an IP-based network. We want to provide them with a wide array of products and manufacturers from which to choose so that they can select the best solutions for their particular needs."

The two companies have successfully deployed GR303 for telcos in the US, and are currently working with select customers who are interested in deploying VoIP with an Occam/Siemens solution.

"The ability of the Siemens SURPASS hiQ 8000 softswitch to interoperate with other next-generation, IP-based products is of major importance to our customers and is a focus for Siemens," said Susan Schramm, vice president of marketing for Siemens Communications. "Occam is clearly a leading provider of IP-based broadband loop carriers with a strong track record in the independent telco market. Interoperability between our two products makes our customers' transition to an all-IP network simpler, more cost-effective and future proof."

The Occam BLC 6000 integrates the functions of an NGDLC, FTTx System, IP DSLAM, Optical Multiplexer, VoIP Line Access Gateway, Line Test System and Ethernet Switch into an environmentally hardened loop carrier system. The system includes plug-in blades, chassis, cabinets and management software. It supports standard lifeline POTS phones and DSL modems; integrates into Class 5 switches via TR08 or GR 303; and connects IP IADs, Terminal Adapters or IP phones to IP softswitches. The BLC 6000 incorporates a unique distributed architecture that enables system blades to operate in a 12-slot high capacity chassis or in a standalone 1RU chassis.

Siemens SURPASS hiQ 8000 softswitch is part of the SURPASS family of Next Generation Solutions (including SURPASS Voice over Broadband (VOBB), Hosted Office (TM) (BC) and Voice over Cable (VoC). The SURPASS hiQ 8000 solutions provides carrier-grade call and media gateway control capability for interconnection of multimedia services between IP networks -- wired and wireless -- as well as IP networks and TDM-based networks. Ranked the market share leader by Dell' Oro Market Research, Siemens reached the 5 million mark for licenses sold for its SURPASS softswitch.
