Sensicast's Sensimesh Development System Speeds Deployment of Crossbow Wireless Sensor Networks

Posted on: Monday, 7 June 2004, 06:00 CDT

New System Helps End Users and OEMs Quickly Build and Test Sensor Networks That Use Crossbow Hardware

Sensicast Systems, provider of wireless sensor networking products and solutions, and Crossbow Technology today announced at Sensors Expo the availability of Sensicast's Sensimesh Development System for Crossbow's line of wireless sensor motes. The Sensimesh Development System provides OEMs and end users with the easiest way to get sensor networks up and running in minutes. Based on the Sensicast Sensor Networking Platform, the Development System supports motes & sensor boards from Crossbow Technology and delivers an environment in which developers and system integrators can quickly develop applications and build and test sensor networks prior to their deployment.

"Sensor networks should be easy and quick to deploy, and new applications should not require the abandonment of previous investments," said Paul Sereiko, CEO of Sensicast. "Our new Sensimesh Development System lets OEMs and users take advantage of what they already have in place, making sensor networking easier and more cost-effective than ever. Crossbow is a leading supplier of wireless sensor nodes to the industrial, commercial and R&D community. Providing compatibility with their products is a big win for us, for Crossbow, and for our mutual customers."

The system provides a unified way for developers and integrators to create monitoring and alerting applications using a bi-directional, multi-hop sensor network based on the open source TinyOS networking protocol. The system dramatically simplifies the integration of external analog, digital and other sensors and actuators, and includes a software interface that provides simple configuration for comprehensive testing and management of the network.

"Sensicast has proven to be a quality development partner and a valued participant in the TinyOS community," said Mike Horton, CEO of Crossbow Technology. "Providing Sensicast's hardened software to our customers lets them focus on their application and get up and running immediately."

The Sensimesh Development System displays real-time and historical data in an easily customizable textual and graphical interface, and readily supports the display and control of existing sensors and actuators operating within the mesh network. A wide variety of applications can be quickly created through simple configuration of alert responses based upon incoming sensor readings. Sensicast also enables the testing of the network of sensors and actuation devices by sending out commands from within the Sensimesh Development System. The Sensimesh Development System is available immediately for Crossbow's MTS300 /310 multipurpose sensor board and MDA 300 data acquisition board.
