Metrobility Optical Systems Teams With Corning Cable Systems to Develop Customer Premises Solution
Posted on: Monday, 7 June 2004, 06:00 CDT
Metrobility Optical Systems and Corning Cable Systems have jointly developed a specialized solution in response to a requirement expressed by Time Warner Cable. The solution combines a Fiber-to-the-Business (FTTB) junction box designed by Corning Cable Systems to house Metrobility's Access Optical Network Unit (RA21) to provide an optical Ethernet connection to businesses in the Raleigh, N.C. area.
"The initiative taken by both Corning Cable Systems and Metrobility has resulted in an elegant and simple customer premises solution," stated Mark Eagle, Director of Project Engineering of Time Warner Cable. "The end result is a secure, reliable and manageable end point in an easy-to-install enclosure."
Metrobility's RA21 Optical Network Unit enables Time Warner Cable to connect businesses to their high-speed data network utilizing ITU-grid CWDM wavelengths to maximize the installed fiber. The RA21 offers a single-mode 100 Mbps fiber connection to Time Warner's network and a 100 Mbps CAT 5 copper connection to the business's local area network. The RA21 gives Time Warner a secure demarcation point between the two networks while providing unique remote management capabilities to address service reliability issues required by business users.
The Corning Cable Systems CDP Access Terminal is based on an enclosure used in residential and commercial deployments for coax, twisted pair and fiber cable applications. The CDP Access Terminal accommodates Metrobility's RA21 and provides cable management for the fiber optic cable, the power cable and the CAT 5 coax cable. The unit provides strain-relief and fiber management for the fiber cable and a splice tray, which connects the single-mode pigtails to the RA21 unit.
"Metrobility's active optical solution is a perfect complement to our existing FTTB Solutions, which include outside plant enclosures and fiber infrastructure offerings," stated Ted Messmer, CATV market manager at Corning Cable Systems. "This new product will help both Metrobility and Corning Cable Systems further advance the deployment of optical access networks within the CATV market."
The solution will be displayed at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Orlando, Florida from June 15 through June 18 at the Corning Cable Systems booth (#1029) and at the Metrobility Optical Systems booth (#2016).
