Avago Technologies Introduces 6-Channel Commutation Encoder Module Series for Brushless DC Motors Used in Industrial Applications; Integrated C-Shaped Encoder Modules Simplify Assembly of Motors Used in Industrial Automation Applications

Posted on: Tuesday, 22 August 2006, 09:00 CDT

Avago Technologies, the world's largest privately held semiconductor company, today announced its first series of small 6-channel optical incremental C-shaped encoder modules for Brushless DC motors used in industrial automation applications. Avago's AEDB-9340 series modules, which include a codewheel with an optical radius of 15 mm (0.590 inch), are designed to reduce overall motor size and fit easily into round encoder housings. This latest addition to Avago's optical encoder series provides housed encoder manufacturers with an integrated encoder that is easy to assemble and offers better switching accuracy (+/- 1 degree mechanical commutation) than conventional Hall sensors.

Typical industrial automation applications where the AEDB-9340 can be used in Brushless DC (BLDC) motors include food and beverage processing equipment, packaging and textile machinery, and machine tools. Other application examples include robotic devices, industrial printers, plotters, metal processing, and wood working equipment.

The demand for improved motor control by housed encoder and motor manufacturers is driving the trend towards wide scale use of optical encoders with integrated commutation output over Hall devices in BLDC motor applications. A growing number of designers are choosing optical encoders for their motor designs because they are less expensive and just as reliable as Hall sensors, which add to motor length, design complexity and assembly costs.

Avago's AEDB-9340 series enables designers to develop motors that are smaller and easier to align reducing the time required for housed encoder assembly. These new encoder modules also provide superior switching accuracy due to much lower hysteresis when compared to Hall sensors, which require larger housings and are more difficult to align. The commutation signals of one or more pole pairs are configurable by changing the codewheel pattern. Moreover, with the use of transmissive technology, the encoder provides better and more accurate feedback as the BLDC motor torque ripple is reduced. Overall, the AEDB-9340 provides designers with a powerful solution that helps to simplify housed encoder integration.

Features

-- Two channel quadrature rotary output with ungated index pulse (A, B, I) for position feedback

-- Three channel integrated commutation output (U, V, W) to emulate Hall sensor feedback

-- Up to 2,500 counts per revolution (CPR)

-- Up to 150 kHz frequency response

-- TTL compatible

-- Single 5 V supply

-- Operating temperature: -10 degrees to 85 degrees C

-- Configurable pole-pair with matching 2, 3, and 4 pole-pair codewheel options

-- RoHS compliant

U.S. Pricing and Availability

Avago's AEDB-9340 series optical encoder modules are priced at $29 each in 1,000 unit quantities and are available now in sample and production quantities. An evaluation kit, which includes an alignment tool and connector cable, is available for $325. Both products are available through Avago's direct sales channel and worldwide distribution partners.
