PMC-Sierra Introduces Industry's Highest Density 32-Channel Line Interface Unit Device For T1/E1/J1 Applications

Posted on: Tuesday, 8 June 2004, 06:00 CDT

New HDLIU 32 Device Optimized for Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms, Add/Drop Multiplexers, Wireless Infrastructure, Multi-Service Switches and Routers

PMC-Sierra, Inc (Nasdaq:PMCS) today introduced the PM4329 HDLIU(TM) 32, the industry's highest density and lowest cost copper line interface unit (LIU) solution for medium- and short-haul operations. The HDLIU 32 delivers unprecedented 32-channel T1/E1/J1 port density and is optimized for multi-service provisioning platforms (MSPPs), add/drop multiplexers (ADMs), wireless infrastructure, multi-service switches and edge routers. The highly integrated HDLIU 32 device provides four times the density compared to current copper interface solutions and provides networking OEMs with smaller footprint equipment and increased cost-savings.

"With the addition of the HDLIU 32, PMC-Sierra continues to expand our family of multi-channel LIUs by combining world-class digital and mixed signal analog design expertise into the industry's highest density solution," said Jean Lamarche, director of Marketing, Service Provider Division at PMC-Sierra. "PMC-Sierra is delivering highly integrated, cost-effective T1/E1/J1 products and supporting our customers' needs in this competitive market as the world-wide demand for high density copper interface cards continues to grow."

HDLIU 32 Key Features and Benefits

The HDLIU 32 features 32 short-haul T1 or E1 LIUs in a single device. Currently customers are requiring up to 84 T1s or 63 E1s on a single copper interface card across several markets. Traditional solutions rely on interconnecting the various semiconductor components with clock and data signals. Using the traditional approach to address these higher port count requirements quickly becomes cost prohibitive and requires more complexity for equipment designers as chip pin count and power consumption increase. To address this problem, the HDLIU 32 device supports a low trace count, high-density, industry standard Scalable Bandwidth Interconnect (SBI(TM)) bus. In addition, for transport applications, the device supports a variant of this interface referred to as the Scalable Bandwidth Interconnect Transport (SBI TR) bus. This technology enables PMC-Sierra to offer the lowest cost T1/E1/J1 mapper/framer/LIU solution in the industry.

High-Density Copper Service Aggregation for Optical Transport Equipment

Within an optical access system, local exchange carriers can leverage available fiber optic cables to bring tremendous bandwidth to business users. Many of these customers still rely on the proven T1/E1/J1 interface to carry voice and data traffic over the optical network. Combined with PMC-Sierra's transport mapper devices, the PM5341 TEMAP(TM) 28 and PM5366 TEMAP 84, the HDLIU 32 can significantly increase the number of T1/E1/J1 links added or dropped from a metropolitan area MSPP (see Figure 1).

Optimized Port Density for Wireless Infrastructure Equipment

The HDLIU 32 complements PMC-Sierra's PM4332 TE32(TM), a high density 32-channel framer, to provide the industry's most comprehensive T1/E1/J1 product family optimized for deployment in wireless equipment such as base transceiver stations (BTS) and base station controllers (BSC) (see Figure 2).

Pricing, Availability and Customer Support

The HDLIU 32 is currently sampling. Pricing is available upon request. The HDLIU 32 has a 7-watt typical power dissipation, provides a -40 to +85c industrial temperature operating range and is packaged in a single 27mm x 27mm L2BGA package. A comprehensive support package including datasheets, software drivers and technical overviews is available at www.pmc-sierra.com/networking.
