Tokyo, Japan - Aug. 8, 2002 - (JCN Newswire) - The telecom carrier has placed orders for CDMA2000 1xEV-DO (Evolution Data Only) systems with Fujitsu and Hitachi. The 1xEV-DO system is a 3G IMT2000 technology that supports wireless data communication speeds up to 2.4Mbps.

Fujitsu will supply an 800MHz CDMA2000 1xEV-DO RAN (Radio Access Network) system to KDDI, which plans to commercialize an 800MHz 3G CDMA2000 service during the second half of 2003. To be deployed for service covering the Tokyo-Nagoya-Osaka corridor, the system consists of a RAN and an IP network. Fujitsu will package base stations and base station controllers from Samsung Electronics with other equipment and provide maintenance support to KDDI.

Hitachi will supply CDMA2000 1xEV-DO base stations for use for both 2GHz and 800MHz CDMA2000 services. KDDI will launch a trial service on the 2GHz band in April 2003.
