Softek's Nonstop Data Mobility Solutions Help Sun Launch New Host-Based Data Migration Service

Posted on: Thursday, 31 August 2006, 09:00 CDT

Softek(R) Storage Solutions, the leader in Nonstop Data Mobility(TM) software solutions, today announced Sun Microsystems is using the company's software as a key component of the new Host-Based Data Migration Service, which was also announced today by Sun. Softek also announced a recently successful data migration project performed by Sun HBDMS that moved more than 11 TB of data to Sun storage.

A component of Sun's Data Migration Services suite, Sun's Host-Based Data Migration Service utilizes Softek Transparent Data Migration Facility (TDMF(TM)) software to provide Sun customers with a complete disk implementation solution for replacements and/or upgrades in Solaris(TM), UNIX, Windows and z/OS environments. The service can also provide the data movement required to support a variety of common IT initiatives, including optimization, consolidation, relocation and implementing tiered disk storage.

In a recent deployment of this service, Sun's professional service team used Softek TDMF to move more than 11 TB of mission-critical data for a large enterprise located in the mid-West that provides integrated customer management solutions for telecommunications service providers. During the engagement, Sun and Softek exceeded customer expectations by enabling throughput of nearly 1 GB per second, and moving 75 volumes simultaneously. Because of the high throughput, an additional 500 GB of data was also moved, which was beyond the scope of the original project plan.

Softek TDMF is extremely useful within highly available environments because there is minimal application outage required during the data migration process. With features such as "throttling," migrations can speed up or slow down as environmental demand increase or decrease. In addition, Sun's data migration services are generally faster and easier to use when compared to other solutions, such as data migration appliances, because no logistics are involved in shipping hardware, configuring connectivity or ensuring their availability.

"Today's announcement extends our eight-year relationship with Sun and StorageTek, as they continue to combine their storage assets into a single offering," said Steven Murphy, president and CEO at Softek. "We are pleased that Softek can participate in the expansion of Sun's service offerings, which enable Sun customers to receive a simple and unified approach to moving live data, over any distance, to Sun storage from any other platform or vendor as part of an overall IT operational practice. This is extremely useful for data mobility projects within Solaris(TM), z/OS, Unix, Linux and Windows environments for improving your ability to keep data online, mitigate risk of data loss or corruption, reduce costs, manage data across mixed environments, and optimize storage while still meeting all business continuity of operations requirements."
