Secure Computing Announces SmartFilter 4.0 Web Filtering Solution

Posted on: Tuesday, 15 June 2004, 06:00 CDT

Expanded web database, new categories, and reporting options offer enterprise customers powerful new options for managing Internet use

Secure Computing Corporation (NASDAQ:SCUR), the experts in securing connections between people, applications, and networks(TM), today announced the June release of SmartFilter(R) v4.0, a major upgrade of the company's SmartFilter web filtering solution, which is employed as an enterprise-wide solution by over 40 percent of the Fortune 100. Significant enhancements to SmartFilter v4.0 include expansion of the URL database to over six million sites, additional categories that address the latest security threats, and a revolutionary Web-based reporting feature offering real-time feedback on an organization's Web usage.

SmartFilter v4.0 now offers one of the largest and most accurate databases of Web content, featuring over six million sites in 62 granular categories. The SmartFilter v4.0 Control List addresses the newest security, productivity, and liability threats with a new set of categories, including Instant Messaging, Malicious Sites, Peer to Peer, and Spyware. In addition to sites added by the new categories, the SmartFilter v4.0 Control List was enhanced by the merging of the SmartFilter and N2H2(TM) databases, which were rated #1 and #2 in independent studies. Secure Computing acquired the filtering company N2H2 in October, 2003.

"Organizations of all sizes recognize the superiority of Secure Computing's filtering solutions for managing use of the Internet, from very large global organizations like the U.S. Army running SmartFilter on Cisco Content Networking appliances to home offices using Linksys Broadband Routers," said Mike Gallagher, senior vice president, product development for Secure Computing. "With a wide selection of integrations -- both On-Box(TM) and off-box, and a superb filtering database, Secure Computing can meet the Internet management needs of organizations both large and small."

In addition, SmartFilter 4.0 includes a powerful new set of reporting features that allow organizations to understand their Web usage and take effective steps to enforce acceptable use policies. The new SmartReporter(TM) offers unparalleled precision reporting capabilities through a browser-based desktop application that allows managers to create detailed reports on the Web use of individuals, groups, and departments. From a desktop Web browser, a manager can employ a powerful set of drill-down tools to view category activity by user, URL, and content type.

"The information security industry is evolving toward multi-function security appliances, and IDC projects that by 2007, 80 percent of all security solutions will be delivered via a dedicated security appliance," said Brian Burke, of the analyst firm IDC. "Secure Computing is well-positioned to capitalize on this security industry trend, since Secure Computing's filtering solutions now interoperate with 27 networking devices, including industry leading platforms such as Cisco PIX, Blue Coat, and Check Point FireWall-1."
