Teknovus Ships First Integrated EPON Optical Line Terminal Chip Solution for FTTH
Posted on: Tuesday, 15 June 2004, 06:00 CDT
Teknovus, a provider of semiconductors for broadband access networks, today announced a fully integrated Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) chip for Optical Line Terminals (OLTs). The TK3721 OLT chip is fully compliant with the IEEE 802.3ah EPON standard, and represents the first complete silicon solution suitable for mass-market, multi-service Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fiber-to-the-Business (FTTB) deployments.
Lowell D. Lamb, Teknovus Vice President of Marketing, states, "Until the introduction of the TK3721, designing an OLT required the use of expensive, discrete components. Development cycles were long, performance and port densities were low, while cost and power consumption were high. The TK3721 attacks these issues head-on and transforms IEEE EPON platforms into carrier-class solutions."
"The level of integration in the Teknovus EPON chips is remarkable," says Kiyotaka Shikata, Manager of Product Development for Fujitsu Access. "It solves a lot of problems for us."
The TK3721 and its sister chip, the TK3701 Optical Network Unit (ONU) chip, are the basic building blocks that will power a large fraction of the explosive growth in FTTH underway in Japan and now spreading to the rest of Asia and the world. With millions of new lines forecast for the next twelve months in Japan alone, equipment vendors must deliver systems that offer triple-play residential services and carrier-class business services at costs that meet or beat those of HFC or DSL platforms. Teknovus currently has ten major equipment manufacturers designing mass-market EPON equipment using the TK37xx family. This is a remarkable achievement for products introduced only this year and an emphatic validation of the Teknovus EPON chipset solution. Multi-million line volumes are projected over the next two years.
The TK3721 OLT controller chip is shipping.
