MIT's Technology Review magazine today announced its annual TR 35 - 35 technologists and scientists under the age of 35, whose inventions and research have been found exciting by the editors. The 35 will be profiled in the September/October issue of MIT's magazine of innovation and at www.technologyreview.com/TR35.
Additionally, two 2006 TR35 members have been selected as Technology Review's Humanitarian of the Year and Technology Review's Innovator of the Year.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Christina Galitsky was lauded as Humanitarian of the Year for her work using engineering to solve problems that affect countries in the poor world. Galitsky's lab is currently developing a cookstove for the refugee women in Darfur; Sudan, and a low-cost filter to remove arsenic from well water in Bangladesh.
Innovator of the Year Joshua Schachter was hailed for his creation of the del.icio.us social bookmarking website, which popularized the use of tagging. Del.icio.us was recently acquired by Yahoo!
"The members of this year's TR35 are solving long-standing problems and creating entirely new technologies," says Jason Pontin, editor-in-chief of Technology Review. "Their innovations address both everyday concerns and lofty goals," he adds.
The honorees are selected by the editors of the magazine in collaboration with a prestigious panel of judges from major institutions and corporations including Boston University, Hewlett-Packard Labs, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, Caltech and Applied Materials.
A number of the 35 winners including Galitsky and Schachter will be featured on Technology Review's new video blog--the TR Vlog--designed to highlight visually the personalities of the innovators. The vlog is located at www.technologyreview.com/blog/video.aspx
Many of the TR35 will be also be on hand at Technology Review's annual Emerging Technologies Conference, held at MIT on September 27-28, 2006: http://www.technologyreview.com/events/tretc/index.aspx
