Motorola Continues Worldwide Support for OpenCable(TM) Standards, Licenses Its DFAST Encryption System to Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) of Korea

Posted on: Tuesday, 15 June 2004, 06:00 CDT

JEJU, Korea, June 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. today announced it has agreed to license its Dynamic Feedback Arrangement Scrambling Technology (DFAST) for the Korean market to the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA). The license agreement with TTA underscores Motorola's commitment to supporting major consumer electronics vendors worldwide as they ready to deploy OpenCable-compliant products. The announcement was made prior to the Korean Cable Television Association Conference 2004 (Jeju International Convention Center, June 16-18).

Since Motorola's DFAST is also part of CableLabs' OpenCable(TM) specification used in the United States, this license agreement will enable vendors to design equipment that can be used internationally. With a common standard in place for the US and South Korea, operators will gain a greater choice of products to offer their customers. Further, the agreement may facilitate opening new retail distribution channels by allowing consumers to purchase digital-cable-ready TVs that can receive basic digital service with the insertion of CableCARD devices from various conditional access systems, including Motorola's MediaCipher(R) system.

"Today's announcement is another example of Motorola's continued support for open architecture systems, and our commitment to propelling digital cable services into the mainstream," said Dan Sutorius, vice president of market development for Motorola's digital media systems business. "When Motorola created DFAST a decade ago, our goal was to design an encryption system that would ensure the protected delivery of content to consumer set-tops. The technology has since gained wide spread adoption, and, through this latest agreement, can now provide a revenue generator for Korean operators while delivering new connectivity options to Korean subscribers."

"We expect OpenCable to drive digital cable in the South Korean market," said In-Sup Cho, managing director of TTA. "The move to this US-based global standard will create competition among vendors, which will ultimately prove beneficial to Korean consumers as well as Korean cable operators."

The Ministry of Information and Communication of Korea officially adopted the OpenCable standard for the roll-out of digital cable TV to 10 million households in Korea over the next 4 to 5 years.
