Leading Israeli companies have teamed up with top academic institutes to develop next generation video services in a Consortium, known as NeGeV (Next Generation Video). The NeGeV Consortium consists of seven of the top companies in the communications industry: Comverse (NASDAQ:CMVT); Scopus Video Networks (NASDAQ:SCOP); Optibase (NASDAQ:OBAS); SintecMedia; Orca Interactive (LSE:ORCA); Mobixell Networks; BitBand and senior researchers from Israel's premier research institutes: Bar-Ilan University, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Technion and Tel Aviv University. The Consortium operates under the MAGNET program, funded by the Israel Chief Scientist, under the auspices of the Israeli Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor. Project costs are estimated at $20 million.
The Consortium aims to develop methods, technologies and platforms to facilitate personalized video services over broadband and mobile networks. Focused on service management, content management and content delivery, NeGeV will create enabling generic technologies to provide commercially viable and scalable personalized video content services. These next-generation Personalized Video Content Services will enable cable, IPTV and mobile operators and other service providers to offer extensive customized video content for the individual to millions of subscribers.
"At NeGeV, we are working to create a new paradigm for viewing video content," said Benny Einhorn, Chairman of NeGeV and Chief Marketing Officer of Comverse. "Using a home TV, mobile phone, PC or portable video player, individuals will be able to view video content of their preference, any time, anywhere, on their device of choice."
MAGNET manager, Ilan Peled said, "We are committed to supporting Israeli companies at the leading edge of research and development. We believe that the members of the NeGeV consortium have the capabilities to produce generic technologies that will enable a new personal TV reality to be adopted worldwide."
