An Overall Outlook on Speech Quality of VoIP - Bridging the Gap Between the Technical Network-World and the (Psychoacoustic) World of Quality Perception

Perceived Quality of VoIP addresses speech quality of VoIP networks, whilst addressing the implications for the design of VoIP networks and systems. The book bridges the gap between the technical network-world and the (psychoacoustic) world of quality perception. Starting from the network designer's point of view, the different characteristics of the network are addressed, and then linked to features perceived by users. Since quality can be viewed as the result of a comparison of perceived features with desired features, not only the perception of features determines quality, but also the features a user desires of a system. The book addresses both of these aspects. The first part of the book (chapters 1 to 4) presents a review of the related literature. Chapters 5 through 7 summarize original research the author has conducted on the topic. Finally, Chapter 8 condenses the different modelling approaches discussed in the previous chapters, and presents a parametric network planning model for quality prediction of VoIP networks.
Alexander Raake studied Electrical Engineering at RWTH Aachen (Germany) and ENST/TTelecom Paris (France). After his graduation in 1997, he first started a research activity at the Technical University in Lausanne (EPFL). From 1999 to 2004, he then worked at the Institute of Communication Acoustics, Ruhr-University Bochum (Germany), on the auditory quality of future user-interfaces and of packet-based transmission such as VoIP. As a result of this work, he obtained his Doctoral Degree (Dr.-Ing.) in January 2005. From 2004 to 2005, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Man-Machine Communication Department of the LIMSI-CNRS in Orsay, France, working on speech intelligibility in multiparty virtual chat-rooms. In 2005, he joined Deutsche Telekom Laboratories, Berlin University of Technology, where he works as a Senior Scientist on usability aspects. Since 1999, he participates in the standardization activities of the ITU-T on the transmission performance of telephone networks and terminals, where he currently acts as a Co-Rapporteur for question Q.12/12.
