Mitsubishi Electric Announces Sale of 2.5 Gbps Transceiver Modules for Optical Communication
Posted on: Tuesday, 12 September 2006, 00:00 CDT
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (President and CEO: Setsuhiro Shimomura) announced today that it will begin sample shipment of three 2.5 Gbps (Gigabits per second) transceiver modules for optical communication beginning October 1, 2006. The modules are capable of the widest operating temperature in the industry between -40C-+85C, and comply to the Small Form Factor Pluggable Multi-Source Agreement (SFP MSA). The modules will be on display at the ECOC 2006 (32nd European Conference on Optical Communication) in Cannes, France from September 24-28.

Aim of Sale
With the dissemination of ADSL, Fiber To The Home (FTTH), and other high-speed, high-volume communication services for the home, there has been a rush to expand the communications network in metropolitan areas(a) to keep up with sudden increases in communication traffic. This has created a demand for a compact optical communication transceiver module capable of stable performance without loss from changes in temperature.
Mitsubishi Electric has been producing the SFP MSA compliant MF-2500FXE/D series 2.5 Gbps transceiver module for optical communication since April 2006. The three new modules have improved low temperature operating range to -40C-+85C, the widest range in the industry, creating a total lineup of six transceiver modules.
(a) Metropolitan Area is defined as the 80 km area between trunk lines with a relay distance of over 100km and subscriber lines with relay distances of under 20 km
Product Characteristics
1) Compliance with OC-48 SONET/SDH standard even in a low temperature environment
Previous 2.5 Gbps optical transceiver modules were limited to operating temperature ranges of -5C-+85C. The new transceivers are capable of meeting SDH/SONET STM-16/OC-48 standards(b) at temperatures down to -40C without temperature control by using both a semiconductor laser with improved performance at low temperatures as well as an optimized laser driving circuit. This will enable outdoor installation of optical communication devices in cold climate areas.
(b) A standard in SONET/SDH on 2.5 Gbps transmission
2) 155Mbps -2.7Gbps multi-rate operation
By improving performance at low speed, the transceiver can handle transmission rates from 155Mbps -2.7Gbps. This allows easy construction of optical transmission systems at different transmission speeds.
3) SFF8472 standard compatible Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM)
DDM is a function that reads essential parameters of optical transceivers in real time. SFF8472 is a standard for hard disks, CD-ROMs, and other storage devices determined by the industry group Small Form Factor (SFF). This will contribute to making the optical communication system compact, high-density mounted and low cost.
