Extreme Networks Drives Open Security With Support of Trusted Computing Group's Trusted Network Connect

Posted on: Tuesday, 12 September 2006, 09:00 CDT

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. today announced that the company is furthering its support of the Trusted Computing Group's Trusted Network Connect (TNC), a set of open specifications for Network Access control allowing organizations to help assure the integrity of devices connecting to the network and enforce security policies.

Extreme Networks(R) award-winning BlackDiamond(R) and Summit(R) switches provide network security based on an open standards approach. As a result of working with the TCG, these solutions are now compliant with the emerging TNC IF-PEP specification. The IF-PEP specification provides network-based enforcement, allowing a policy server to communicate with a switch to restrict levels of network access.

In addition, Extreme Networks Sentriant(TM) Access Guard (AG) security platform plans to support additional TNC specifications in order to deliver a standards-based network access management solution. Today, the Sentriant AG is an enterprise-class solution that offers end-point testing either with or without the need for installing client software. Using standards-based 802.1x with the BlackDiamond and Summit Ethernet switches, the Sentriant AG can place end-points on appropriate VLANs (quarantine VLAN, guest VLAN or production VLAN) based on test results.

"The TNC architecture is an effort that promotes multi-vendor interoperability across a wide variety of endpoints, network technologies, and policies," said Brian Berger, marketing work group chairman, Trusted Computing Group. "We welcome Extreme Networks assistance and commitment to open architectures and the further adoption of standards to help ensure network access and endpoint integrity."

Demo at Interop New York

Extreme Networks will demonstrate this capability as part of a TCG briefing and interoperability demo at the upcoming Interop New York, Sept. 18-21, 2006, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center. During the event, a pair of one hour public sessions will be held at 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 20th, in room 2D08.

TNC is a subgroup of the Trusted Computing Group (TCG), an industry standards group with the mission to develop, define, and promote open standards for trusted computing and security technologies. TNC specifications are designed to help network administrators solve the difficult task of enforcing security policies for network access in increasingly diverse network environments with heterogeneous devices and software from many vendors.
