Info-Tech Research Group News Brief Re: Microsoft Live Search

LONDON, ON, Sept. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft's announcement today of its updated Live Search service is leveling the search engine playing field and providing serious competition for lead players Google and Yahoo, says Info-Tech Research Group of London, Ontario.
"Microsoft has recognized there are billions of dollars in ad revenue available for viable search engine marketers and they want a piece of that pie," said Carmi Levy, senior research analyst at Info-Tech. "Organizations using Google's AdWords to manage campaigns should compare that service against Microsoft's new offering." Levy says this could be the first of such announcements from major search players including Yahoo!.
Google's AdWords has to this point been the leader in the targeted click-based advertising market. It allows firms to self-manage narrowly-focused advertising campaigns and scales to meet wide-ranging budgets. Google's offering hasn't been without controversy, however, given that Google at one point disabled ads which were based on search terms it deemed to be in violation of existing trademarks. Google later reversed that decision following widespread opposition, but lingering resentment coupled with ongoing criticism regarding pricing continue to dog the search giant.
