Video Access Alliance Calls for Video Choice and Diversity in Programming

Posted on: Wednesday, 13 September 2006, 15:00 CDT

WASHINGTON, Sept. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Video Access Alliance today joined the Association of Independent Programming Networks in hosting a roundtable discussion on understanding the power and value that independent networks provide to competition, diversity, consumer choice and consumer pricing on Capitol Hill. Actor and Comedian Robert Townsend joined CEOs of Independent Networks participating in the event, and multimedia videos produced by the networks were showcased.

"Video Choice will benefit entrepreneurs by allowing for more choices in programming and increasing their access to local neighborhoods," said Julia Johnson, chairperson of the Video Access Alliance. "Video choice will bring opportunity to new talents, provide for diversity in programming, and will strengthen our economy."

The Communications Act of 2006, which was passed by the House of Representatives earlier this year, is currently pending in the Senate. This legislation will update existing telecommunications laws and provide new video choices for American consumers. Because video choice will have a positive impact on all networks, the Video Access Alliance is seeking to ensure that this legislation meets the needs of the fast growing sector of independent and minority channels.

"We applaud the House of Representatives for passing video choice legislation and hope the Senate will do the same," said Broderick Byers, founder and CEO of the Employment and Career Channel. "Current laws restrict the ability of new video distributors to enter the market, creating a barrier for independent and minority networks to have their content carried and inhibiting consumer's choices."

"Our current telecommunications laws protecting established networks will ultimately harm smaller ones," commented Doron Gorshein, CEO of America Channel. "By passing the Communications Act of 2006, Congress can directly help independent and minority networks and provide more options to consumers."
