NHIC Ilsan Hospital Turns to IBM to Manage Medical Information Systems

IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that NHIC Ilsan Hospital in Korea is using IBM software to manage its new medical information system.

To establish its advanced medical information system, NHIC Ilsan Hospital realized it first had to address the way it managed its broad set of IT systems and services. The hospital turned to IBM to establish a service-based system management environment that can help prevent failures in IT infrastructure, such as system outages, and respond quickly in the case of network bottlenecks or failures.

The hospital has three core systems: the Hospital Information System for registration, payment, treatment, nursing, and general management of patients; the Medical Data Warehouse, which manages medical analysis information; and the Picture Archiving & Communication System for archiving and managing medical data. The hospital needed to efficiently manage all three of these systems, as well as various applications that run on top the systems, such as the hospital's Order Communication System, web portal and data warehouse. They also wanted to make it easier for hospital staff to access medical records through "single sign-on," which reduces the number of IDs and passwords required.

To accomplish this, the hospital worked with IBM to develop a service-based IT environment that integrates the management of systems, networks and applications. A single reporting system enabled the hospital to achieve improved efficiency while Tivoli's automated early-warning system minimized service downtime through the immediate detection and notification of IT failures.

"With the implementation of this architecture, NHIC Ilsan Hospital will continue to strive for efficient management of IT infrastructure to support advanced medical digitalization."

IBM's portfolio of IT service management software automates some of the most challenging processes associated with managing a complex IT environment -- such as managing storage devices, addressing IT failures and deploying new software releases and patches. The software helps customers fight rising IT costs and manage constant change brought on by security threats and the demand to stay competitive in the marketplace.

The IBM products used for this project include IBM Tivoli Monitoring for failure and performance management of hardware, database and middleware; IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console; IBM Tivoli Netview for network management; IBM Tivoli Business System Manager; and IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center for failure management of storage products. Penta Systems Technology, an IBM Business Partner, handled the implementation.
