Netopia Joins Electronic News and Industry Luminaries to Discuss IPTV; Dr. Geng Lin, Vice President of Software Engineering at Netopia, Discusses Service Assurance Strategies for IPTV Service Providers

Posted on: Monday, 18 September 2006, 15:00 CDT

Netopia, Inc. (Nasdaq:NTPA), a market leader in broadband gateways and service delivery software, announced that Dr. Geng Lin, its vice president of application and server software engineering, participated in a panel on the future of IPTV at Electronic News's Breakfast in the Valley roundtable. The panel met on Thursday, Aug. 31, at Electronic News's offices in San Jose, California. Electronic News has published a transcript of the conversation with Dr. Geng Lin, Faraj Aalaei, CEO and co-founder of Centillium, Jim Bennette, vice president of business development at Digital Fountain, and Jim Olson, executive vice president at Tandberg TV, on their Web site.

In the transcript, Electronic News explores the business and technical challenges surrounding the deployment of IPTV. According to the article dated September 15, 2006, Dr. Lin says, "IPTV is to the telcos a survival act and growth strategy. Their traditional revenue stream -- voice and data -- is declining with competition from Tivo, Vonage and Skype, and even mobile operators. They have to find new revenue streams. They believe this new video-based service is the magic bullet for the telcos."

Netopia offers service providers a full range of products and services that assure the success of IPTV deployment -- from the consumer gateway to the desktop. These products include the MiAVo range of bonded ADSL2+ and VDSL2 gateways, Netopia Broadband Server (NBBS) software for automated service activation and configuration management, and the recently released eCare version 4.5, software that enables service providers' help-desks to provide customer care through remote control. Recently Netopia completed engineering work to implement the DSL Forum TR-111 specification, enabling the remote management and support of devices -- like IPTV set-top boxes -- behind the gateway, through TR-069 service delivery systems.

A transcript of the panel discussion is posted on Electronic News's Web site at http://www.reed-electronics.com/electronicnews/ in the "Breakfast in the Valley" section.
