New ISG 45 and ISG 45+ Allow Providers to Cost Effectively Reach Any Size Customer With Managed Ethernet Services

Posted on: Monday, 21 June 2004, 06:00 CDT

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Overture Networks, a leading developer of packet-based multiservice access platforms, today announced the most cost-effective metro access platforms offering Ethernet, circuit emulation through patented pseudo-wires, and next-generation services to any size location. The two new products, the ISG 45 and the ISG 45+, feature plug-and-play capabilities and network maintenance functions specifically designed to address the needs of branch offices and small enterprises at the metro edge.

Today's customers are asking for Ethernet services at price points comparable to what they pay for low speed circuit-based services. Further, not all infrastructures currently in place are designed to support Ethernet services, which means service providers must either build out new networks or create overlays, neither of which is economical for single or remote customers. The ISG 45 and ISG 45+ are designed to allow providers to reach these customers -- without installing costly new infrastructure -- at price points that make it practical to offer these new Ethernet services.

"As more tier-one carriers migrate to IP/MPLS networks, the need to drive advanced services to the metro edge will accelerate over the next few years," said Todd Hanson, principal analyst with Gartner. "Those platforms most able to efficiently and cost effectively leverage the benefits of MPLS at the edge will play a leading role in driving future carrier network planning."

By offering multiple levels of priority, the ISG 45 and ISG 45+ can deliver guaranteed levels of Quality of Service to the remote edge of the metro network, a crucial requirement for high-margin applications such as Voice over IP. In addition, the ISG 45 and ISG 45+ can provide complete transmission management control to the edge. With these latest additions to the ISG family, carriers and enterprises can deploy managed Ethernet services over the thousands of installed SONET/SDH add/drop multiplexers (ADMs) and rapidly extend these Ethernet services to off-net locations via leased and wireless facilities.

The ISG 45 includes a DS3 network connection and two subscriber Ethernet ports that allow for the prioritization of traffic. The ISG 45+ adds a T1 subscriber port and patented Pseudo-Wire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3) technology that allows time-division multiplexing (TDM) voice or private line data to be combined with Ethernet traffic over the DS3 facility. With either of these products, providers can continue to provide revenue-producing TDM services, bring new Ethernet services to remote locations, use their MPLS infrastructure, and, with packet-based transport, utilize the entire DS3 bandwidth.

The two platforms are also plug-and-play, with minimal configuration required for fast, easy setup. Further, the new products contain a powerful set of statistics and diagnostics accessed in-band from the network operations center that can help a carrier or enterprise keep the platform running. The ISG 45 and ISG 45+ feature built-in DS3 loopback tests and a hands-free remotely controlled Ethernet Time Division Reflectometry (TDR) test that make delivering Ethernet services, for the first time, simple in the metro access environment.

"The optimal combination of manageability, price performance and cost effectiveness in the ISG 45/45+ cannot be found anywhere on the market today," said Chip Redden, senior director of marketing and product management of Overture Networks. "With a return on investment of three months or less, the compelling economics of the ISG 45 and ISG 45+ will make operators take a second look at bringing Ethernet and next-generation services down to the remote edge."

With over 300 local exchange carrier and enterprise customers in North America, GoDigital Networks Corporation is a leading provider of copper-based ADSL extension, DS3 extension and digital voice carrier systems. GoDigital's recent partnership with Overture Networks incorporates the ISG 45 or ISG 45+ with the HelixLight 45D DS3 Extension System to deliver Ethernet and TDM services over last mile copper. With Overture Networks new cost-effective metro access platforms combined with GoDigital's copper based DS3 transport system service providers have the ability to bring new revenue generating services to any subscriber within the 'last mile' -- without the need to place fiber to transport the DS3.

"Using both our HelixLight 45D and the ISG 45 and ISG 45+ from Overture Networks, GoDigital can bring high-margin Ethernet services and T1 TDM services to remote subscribers while using as few as four copper pairs from the existing copper network infrastructure," said Frank Akers, GoDigital Networks' founder, chairman and chief development officer. "Further, the cost effectiveness and quick return on investment of Overture Networks remote metro access solution will allow us to increase our network footprint even further and grow our subscriber base."

The ISG 45 is available today and the ISG 45+ will be available in August 2004.
