Hearst Corporation Deploys MobileAccess Universal Wireless Network at New Hearst Tower in New York City

MobileAccess Networks, an enterprise wireless innovator, announced today that Hearst Corporation has deployed the MobileAccess Universal Wireless Network in its new 46-story Hearst Tower, the first "green" commercial skyscraper in New York City. Opened in June 2006, Hearst's state-of-the-art corporate headquarters is using the MobileAccess Wire-It-Once infrastructure solution to provide seamless coverage for a variety of wireless services, including Hearst's Cisco-based WLAN implementation and cellular services from multiple cellular operators such as Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile and Cingular.
Additionally, the MobileAccess MA-850 Wireless LAN Module, a key component of the Universal Wireless Network deployment at Hearst, has met the Cisco Technology Developer Program criteria for interoperability with Cisco Unified Wireless LAN solution.
The MobileAccess Universal Wireless Network enables Hearst's employees and guests to reliably use their mobile phones, laptops and other wireless devices anywhere in the 856,000 square foot building located in Midtown Manhattan. The MA-850 approach provides Hearst a comprehensive, easy-to-maintain WLAN infrastructure that complements the capabilities of their Cisco solution while reducing ongoing operational expenses.
Acting as technology consultant for Hearst, Constantin Walsh-Lowe brought MobileAccess and Cisco together for this project. "After Cisco was selected for the building's IP networking infrastructure, our team reviewed the architectures and capabilities of several distributed antenna system vendors, recommending MobileAccess as the most appropriate fit for the Hearst project based on several factors," said Peter Babigian, principal in Walsh-Lowe's Jersey City headquarters. "As wireless requirements evolve, Hearst will be able to leverage this infrastructure to add new services without the need for additional wiring or costly upgrades. One design goal was deploying this system without active components within the ceiling. By deploying the Cisco Unified Wireless LAN solution over the MobileAccess MA-850 architecture, we were able to cluster the Cisco Access Points in secure, accessible wiring closets, rather than placing them within ceiling cavities."
"Hearst Corporation's deployment of the MobileAccess Universal Wireless Network not only enables the company to cost-effectively provide the wireless services necessary to stay competitive in the marketplace, it has also created a new standard of excellence for commercial office buildings," said Cathy Zatloukal, president and CEO of MobileAccess. "The Hearst deployment builds upon MobileAccess' rich legacy of WLAN deployments at more than 50 organizations, including marquee customers such as Lehman Brothers, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and American University. Our MA-850 WLAN solution significantly enhances MobileAccess' ability to deliver ubiquitous enterprise wireless solutions and opens the door to both new WLAN channels and the next wave of wireless technologies."
"Cisco supports open, standards-based architectures and shares a commitment to interoperable solutions with MobileAccess," said Alan S. Cohen, senior director, Mobility Solutions at Cisco. "Through this vision, the Cisco Technology Developer Program delivers the power of choice to enterprises or service providers -- the ability to extend the Cisco end-to-end architecture with our participants' solid products and technologies. With Cisco Technology Developer Program member offerings, such as the MobileAccess Universal Wireless Network, customers can deploy a broad range of business solutions that foster innovation and drive rapid adoption of business-critical technologies."
The Cisco Technology Developer Program sets criteria for interoperability testing and helps leading product and services firms to deploy innovative business solutions. The program provides enterprise or service provider customers with information regarding Cisco Technology Developer Partner products and services that the Cisco Technology Developer Partner believes meet the program's criteria for interoperability with Cisco networking technology.
