Motorola Helps Speed Time-to-Market With New AdvancedTCA(R) Application-Enabling Platform

Posted on: Tuesday, 22 June 2004, 06:00 CDT

TEMPE, Ariz., June 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. today extended its integrated hardware and software embedded computing solutions with the announcement of its first Application-Enabling Platform built on the Advanced Telecom Computing Architecture (AdvancedTCA).

Motorola's Computer Group made the announcement and will showcase the AdvancedTCA platform at the Supercomm 2004 trade show (June 22-24, McCormick Place, Chicago) in Booth #13800.

The new AXP Basic Integrated Platform is designed to speed time-to-market and lower both manufacturing and life cycle costs for telecom equipment manufacturers. The new platform enables them to simplify and accelerate many of the tasks associated with building and deploying their next-generation products. By eliminating the integration tasks required with the building-block approach to development, equipment manufacturers can focus on the core competencies that set them apart from the competition.

The Yankee Group, a communications and networking research and consulting firm, estimates that telecommunications equipment manufacturers deploying standards-based modular communications platforms such as Motorola's Application-Enabling Platforms can realize up to a 40 percent reduction in overall product development costs versus proprietary systems.

"As the next-generation design cycle begins, telecom equipment manufacturers are being tasked with conserving development capital, making sourcing complete hardware and software platforms based on open standards an increasingly efficient alternative to in-house engineering or integrating building blocks," added Frank Bernhard, managing principal of the supply chain and telecommunication practice at OMNI Consulting Group LLP. "Motorola's Application-Enabling Platforms offer a feasible solution optimized to meet the needs of these manufacturers as they pursue revenue-generating products that leapfrog market competition."

"Telecom equipment manufacturers' added value is shifting from the integration of hardware and software building blocks to creating high-value applications," said Wendy Vittori, corporate vice president and general manager of the Motorola Computer Group. "Motorola is focused on helping its customers to optimize their supply chain so they can focus on adding unique application value. Our new AXP Basic Integrated Platform is accelerating this move to system-level embedded computing solutions."

New Platform Integrates Hardware and Software

The AXP Basic Integrated Platform is a pre-integrated and validated solution with an operating environment. The NEBS- and ETSI-compliant platform integrates Open Source Distribution Labs (OSDL)-compliant Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) with software components that enable Service Availability Forum (SAF)-compliant OpenHPI, blade management, blade hardware functions, base and data fabric management, and interfaces to network management systems.

The AXP Basic Integrated Platform also features several AdvancedTCA payload blade options. A new combined switching and control blade delivers the cost-efficiency that is a hallmark of Application-Enabling Platforms by making innovative use of standards to maximize the payload capacity of an AXP telecom shelf. Other payload blades feature a choice of processors -- including Intel(R) Architecture processors and PowerPC(R) architecture processors -- and Motorola will further extend the functionality of the AXP Basic Integrated Platform with more payload blades in future system releases.

"Modular communications platforms built upon open standards and programmable silicon meet the needs of service providers and equipment manufacturers who are demanding improved time to market and lower costs," said Anthony Ambrose, general manager of modular platform programs for Intel's Communications Infrastructure Group. "Motorola Computer Group's new Application-Enabling Platform builds on Intel processors to address the need for complete, integrated solutions."

Later this year, Motorola expects to detail a complete SAF-compliant operating environment for telecom equipment, including protocol support and integrated protocol services. This environment will enable customers to develop and deploy new telecom applications faster and more easily.

Motorola's Application-Enabling Platforms are supported by an extensive portfolio of Solution Services throughout a customer's product lifecycle, providing a competitive cost of ownership worldwide. The portfolio includes custom design services, 24 hour hardware and software support, technical training, on-site support, engineering and longevity services.

Availability

The AXP Basic Integrated Platform is scheduled for general availability in Q1/2005.
