MTV Networks of New York has announced plans to buy video game maker Harmonix Music Systems Inc. for $175 million in cash.
Harmonix of Cambridge, Mass., is the creator of the Guitar Hero video game, one of the most popular selling titles for Playstation 2, the Boston Herald reported Saturday.
Guitar Hero is an interactive game that allows rock star players to jam to recorded songs with a fake guitar.
Harmonix has been working for more than a decade to bring interactive music to market, the newspaper said.
MTV Networks, owned by Viacom Inc., said the purchase increases its presence in digital media. Video games are big sellers among MTV's targeted viewers of teenagers and young adults.
