Application Security, Inc. Customer Ochsner Health System Named Network World 'Enterprise All-Star'

Posted on: Monday, 25 September 2006, 12:00 CDT

NEW YORK, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Application Security, Inc. (AppSecInc) (http://www.appsecinc.com/), the global leader in database security, today announced that Ochsner Health System has received a Network World Enterprise All-Star Award. Ochsner was lauded for its use of AppSecInc's vulnerability assessment scanner, AppDetective(TM), to reduce and manage database vulnerabilities and ensure compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

As a non-profit, academic, multi-specialty, healthcare delivery system, Ochsner's resources must be dedicated to delivering the highest quality patient care, research and educational initiatives. Additionally, due to the sensitivity of the patient information and intellectual property at the heart of Ochsner's work, security is paramount, particularly in accordance with regulations such as HIPAA.

However, with multiple locations throughout Southeast Louisiana, and a distributed infrastructure comprising Oracle and Microsoft SQL databases, manually auditing the data proved extremely time- and resource-intensive. The organization also felt that contracting with external consultants was not a viable option. Ochsner chose AppDetective to automate and streamline the process.

"Enterprise All-Star Award judges recognized Ochsner Health System for its progressiveness in locking down its databases, particularly those containing sensitive patient information. In particular, they liked Ochsner's automated approach to vulnerability assessment scanning and penetration testing," said Beth Schultz, editor, Network World Enterprise All-Star Issue.

AppDetective allows Ochsner to quickly inventory its database infrastructure -- including new database instances of which IT may not have been aware -- and identify any vulnerable paths that could enable access by unauthorized users. The product's penetration testing capabilities also allow Ochsner to identify weak database passwords or other vulnerabilities in the software. As a result, routine audits now only take an hour -- instead of weeks -- without impacting network performance or introducing downtime in applications or databases -- leading to growth in IT productivity. And most importantly, AppDetective helps safeguard Ochsner's sensitive data, ensuring HIPAA compliance.

"In partnering with AppSecInc, we feel that we've established a 'best-practices' approach to securing databases. Ochsner has a firm handle on password security and has implemented effective policy-based and procedural standards regarding database user access," said Mark Maher, security administrator, Ochsner Health System. "And with AppDetective, we can generate reports that verify database privileges/access that can be reconciled against termination reports, resulting in employees being quickly deleted from database access."

"Congratulations to Ochsner for their recognition as an Enterprise All-Star," said Ted Julian, vice president of marketing and strategy for AppSecInc. "Their acknowledgement demonstrates that grounding a demonstrable, repeatable and effective compliance effort in the database applications that ultimately house their critical data is not only possible, but also yields significant benefits."
