Digg Founders Launch Internet Television Network
Posted on: Tuesday, 26 September 2006, 09:00 CDT
The founders of Digg.com, the web site that transformed social news,
today formally unveiled a new company, Revision3. Revision3 is the first
Internet television network to develop and showcase original music,
science, technology, and comedy programming designed to speak to a new
generation. The network produces and broadcasts successful shows such as
Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht's Diggnation,
Geekdrome, Ctrl + Alt + Chicken, Systm, InDigital, Infected and
thebroken. These properties have been downloaded over 15 million times
to date, and have loyal and enthusiastic fan bases around the world. The
new Fall lineup was also unveiled, and includes an underground music
show, a program that takes a comedic approach to the mysteries of
science, and a how-to show that focuses on digital artistry. All
Revision3 programs are available immediately at revision3.com, on the
Revision3/Apple iTunes Store Front, on BitTorrent's
web site, and more. The company also announced that it has received
funding from Greylock Ventures, Marc Andreessen and a small group of
respected investors.
"Truly revolutionary Internet television isn't
about cutting and pasting television programming onto a computer,"
said Jay Adelson, CEO of digg and Revision3. "It's
created by having your ear to the ground --
knowing what the new generation of Internet consumers wants --
and mastering the latest technology to deliver it. It's
a whole new model for the video broadcast industry. Only Revision3 has
rock-star talent such as Kevin Rose, on-the-edge shows, and a production
team with the Internet and broadcasting experience to make it happen.
The fact that we've been able to acquire an
incredible fan base and high download numbers --
without an official company or marketing effort prior to funding --
shows that Revision3 provides must-see programming to a large group of
trend-setting viewers."
As the amount of on-demand content and video-ready mobile devices
explode, so does the demand for shows specifically geared toward
consumers that want niche content developed with their lifestyle in
mind. These viewers don't want shows
developed for the sensibilities of the masses, but undiluted programming
that speaks to their interests. And they want to view this programming
wherever and whenever they like. Revision3 shows are designed to be
watched on everything from cell phones to computers to televisions. In
addition to being available at www.revsion3.com,
Revision3 shows are currently available with every TiVo box with a
podcast feature, on Palm, Inc. devices via the Blazer browser, and on
partner web sites such as Apple iTunes, Google Video, YouTube,
BitTorrent and DivX.
"We started developing Internet television
shows because my friends and I couldn't find
anything on television that really spoke to us,"
said Kevin Rose, founder of digg and Revision3. "We
didn't want slick, television programming. We
wanted shows that were edgy, went beyond the surface, and delved into
the topics we liked. The only way to do that was to produce the shows
ourselves, without the restrictions and controls that are always imposed
by corporate media companies. We wanted to cover tech, news, science
comedy and music with on-air talent that was in touch with what was at
the top of the underground. Revision3 does just that."
The newly unveiled Revision3 Fall lineup includes:
Diggnation:
The official weekly podcast and video magazine based on content from
legendary social news website digg. Kick back with a beer and get hosts
Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht's humorous, and
street-wise take on timely news stories from the top of digg's
homepage. Over 10 million downloads and counting.
Not Mainstream Typical Videos:
This music show goes behind and inside the independent music scene.
Whether it is a band interview, concert, or sound check, this program
will introduce viewers to new sights and sounds in the underground music
world.
Mysteries of Science Explained:
Ever wonder just how or why a particular scientific phenomenon is the
way it is? Revision3's resident crackpot
scientist provides the answers to life's great mysteries every week in
Mysteries of Science Explained.
Cntrl+Alt+Chicken:
Cntrl+Alt+Chicken is a new form of cooking show for geeks, one in which
the chefs don't know how to cook. Hosts Alex
Albrecht and Heather Stewart use the Internet and their team of lab
rats, Alex and Heather's alter egos, to research and explain all things
culinary. From meatballs to Cordon Bleu, Cntrl+Alt+Chicken uses comedy
and geek culture to take the mystery out of cooking.
Infected by Martin Sargent:
As the Howard Stern crew of the Internet, host Martin Sargent, and pals
Joey and The Gator draw on more than five successful years as
television's first pro Internet surfers to take viewers on a guided tour
of humorous, fascinating, and weird content on the Web --
all in their unique, erudite style.
Geekdrome:
Two geeks debate movies, comics, and video games with verbal sparring
along the lines of a Kevin Smith movie.
Systm:
Systm's how-to episodes move well beyond your ordinary "Do
It Yourself" format to effectively educate
viewers on how to build, use, and take advantage of technologies and
inventions that enhance their lives.
InDigital -- Your Life in Gear:
Hosts Jessica Corbin, Hahn Choi, and Wil Wheaton look at the latest
gadgets and high tech products that define life in the modern world.
Does it work? How would it fit into your life? Is it worth buying?
InDigital answers these questions and more.
thebroken:
thebroken is the legendary underground technology show with a hacker
mentality that caters to the elite (or wannabe 1337) computer user using
a mixture of seriousness and irreverent comedy. thebroken debuted as an
independent online show more than a year ago and has been successfully
downloaded over 3-million times. If it's shady or underground, it's
thebroken.
PixelPerfect with Bert Monroy:
Viewers will sharpen their artistic skills as master digital artist Bert
Monroy takes a stylus and a digital pad and treats it as Monet and
Picasso do oil and canvas. Monroy will cover the tips and tricks viewers
need to know to whip digital images into shape.
Revision3 recently closed a round of angel funding at just under $1
million dollars. The amount was based on the company's
current profitability. In addition to Jay Adelson, Greylock Ventures,
and Marc Andreessen, investors include Don Hutchison, lead investor in
GoodMail, Michael Tanne, CEO and founder of Wink, Mike Maples, Jr.,
founder of Motive, Ron Conway, respected angel investor, Andrew
Schroepfer, founder of Tier1 Research, and Daniel Golding, vice
president of Tier1 Research.
Revision3's business model is unique in the
industry. Shows are of broadcast quality, but are produced quickly, at a
small percentage of the cost of traditional, large scale television
programming. Sponsorships and advertising are sold at a rate that allows
advertisers to easily reach a very desirable demographic at a fraction
of the cost of advertising on traditional television shows. And unlike
traditional television ratings, Revision3 and their advertisers know
exactly how many people are tuning in, allowing them to pinpoint the
efficacy of advertising.
