Video Internet Broadcasting -VIB TV- Awarded First Right to Negotiate Contract As an Integrated Triple Play Provider -iTPP- on iProvo Network

Posted on: Wednesday, 23 June 2004, 06:00 CDT

Contract pending final ratification by Provo, Utah Municipal Council

Video Internet Broadcasting Corp. (VIB TV), the pioneer in iTPP(TM) (integrated Triple Play Provider) voice, video and data services, today announced that the Provo, Utah Municipal Council has approved VIB TV's contract to provide triple play services on the new iProvo fiber optic network. The Council unanimously agreed to award VIB TV the first right to negotiate a contract with a 7-0 vote held May 4, 2004.

The VIB TV/iProvo contract is pending final ratification by the city municipal council and is awaiting legal review from outside counsel Jim Baller, who represents Provo City for iProvo. Ratification is expected this summer.

iProvo is the advanced telecommunications network infrastructure slated to be built and operated by the telecommunications division of the Provo City Energy Department. Bandwidth on this high-capacity network infrastructure will be leased to private companies (such as VIB TV) that will provide retail telecommunications services to businesses and residents of Provo. VIB TV plans to operate in Provo and deliver services to Provo residents and businesses under the brand HomeNet.

"We are pleased to be the first company awarded the right to negotiate a contract with the City of Provo to provide some of the fastest data connection speeds in Utah at up to 100 Megabits per second (Mbps)," said Kelly Ryan, chief executive officer of VIB. "Unlike other so-called 'triple play providers,' the big difference with HomeNet's integrated service is that the telephone, Internet service and television programming all get streamlined through one source at phenomenal quality and speed. As a result, one basic benefit of the HomeNet integrated triple play service for iProvo customers is that they won't have to get off the Internet to use the phone or vice versa."

HomeNet will offer up to 100 Mbps voice, video and data services as the first iTPP (integrated Triple Play Provider) to operate on the iProvo infrastructure. HomeNet's iTPP services will provide Provo residents and businesses with truly integrated phone services, high-speed Internet services and DVD-quality television programming. VIB TV is now the retailer for the iProvo demonstration project for more than 250 residences in the Grandview neighborhood of Provo.

"The best and fastest way to transmit data is via a fiber optic cable, and this is exactly the way data will be available to Provo businesses and residents with services on the iProvo network," said Provo Mayor Lewis K. Billings. "The ability to send and receive vast amounts of data in high-speed streams over iProvo's network is simply a technological marvel that will benefit homes and businesses throughout the city."

According to Paul Venturella, Provo City telecommunications manager and a resident of the Grandview neighborhood, having fiber to his home is amazing.

"Being a part of the Grandview demonstration project, my family and I experienced firsthand the power of fiber technology," Venturella said. "The speed of the Internet is unparalleled in the industry. The video-on-demand offerings bring a whole new dimension to the cable world. We look forward to HomeNet bringing these services to the entire community."
