Connie Weaver, AT&T Executive Vice President of Public Relations, Marketing and Brand, Named 2004 Communicator of the Year

Posted on: Thursday, 24 June 2004, 06:00 CDT

BEDMINSTER, N.J., June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T announced today that Connie Weaver has been named 2004 Communicator of the Year by the Business Marketing Association (BMA) for the successful creation and launch of "The world's networking company (sm)," a global advertising campaign reaffirming AT&T's position as the industry's leading networking and communications company.

The business campaign, which rolled out in February, profiles AT&T as "The world's networking company," asking its business and government customers: "Can your network do this?"

Using a unique "binary" theme, both the print and broadcast ad executions emphasize the importance of networking technology to businesses. The ads show how networking propels people, products and entire economies forward and demonstrate AT&T's differentiation in networking, with a focus on areas such as Internet security and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

"We looked around at what was happening in the marketplace, who was really taking the business-to-business bull by the horns," said Nader Ashway, President of BMA New York City, commenting on the search for the Communicator candidate. "Connie's work really jumped out and demanded attention. AT&T's campaign is a fine example of simple and clear communication, with compelling selling messages. The entire effort, especially the b-to-b arm, is exemplary."

The criteria for selecting a winner for Communicator of the Year are stringent, and include clarity of communication, creative uniqueness and building highly recognizable brand awareness.

"We wanted to shake it up and make a bold statement with this advertising campaign, highlighting AT&T's transformation from a telephone company to The world's networking company," said Weaver. "It's a huge vote of confidence to have an organization as reputable as the Business Marketing Association recognize our hard work and give AT&T's business campaign a big thumbs-up."

Weaver has been executive vice president of AT&T Public Relations, Marketing and Brand since November 2002. In December 2003, she was also elected president of the AT&T Foundation, the company's philanthropy arm.

Prior to her current role, Weaver was vice president of Investor Relations for AT&T, where she played a central role in executing the company's strategy through an extended period of corporate restructuring, including the spin-offs of Lucent Technologies and NCR Corporation; the acquisitions of Teleport Communications Group (TCG), Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI) and MediaOne and the 2000 initial public offering (IPO) of the AT&T Wireless Group tracking stock, which raised over $10 billion, at the time the largest IPO in U.S. history.

Before joining AT&T in 1996, Weaver held Investor Relations and Financial Communications leadership positions at Microsoft Corp., MCI Communications and McGraw Hill.

Weaver is the 37th recipient of the Communicator of the Year award; previous winners include Tom Brokaw, Malcolm Forbes and Gertrude Crain. BMA will honor Weaver at a luncheon today at Tavern on the Green in New York City. For more information about the event, visit http://www.bmanyc.com/.
