Ample Communications to Extend Ethernet Product Portfolio to PCIExpress

Posted on: Wednesday, 17 September 2003, 06:00 CDT

Ample Communications, a leading provider of highly efficient silicon for communications system development, today announced that it will extend its Ethernet product portfolio to include the emerging PCIExpress high-speed interface. Today at the Intel Developer forum, Ample is demonstrating one of the first high-performance Gigabit Ethernet Adapters for PCIExpress operating under the Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP environments.

PCIExpress is an emerging standard for high-speed chip-to-chip and card-to-card interfaces in chassis-based switching and storage systems, as well as in server and PC applications. Combining this emerging system interface with Ethernet, the standard for high-speed enterprise network connectivity, will result in an efficient silicon solution for high-performance interfaces to the enterprise-wide network.

Ample Communications is a member of PCI-SIG, an industry organization chartered to develop and manage the PCI -- Peripheral Component Interconnect -- and PCIExpress standards. While the PCI bus has been the standard I/O interface in PC-based platforms for more than 10 years, current and future I/O requirements for increased bandwidth demand a new interface -- PCIExpress. Because of its extensive developer support and design flexibility, PCIExpress is expected to be a significant catalyst for increasing high-speed I/O connectivity for a wide variety of future computing and communications platforms.

"Computing and communications platforms today need high-performance connectivity to deliver the best performance possible over the enterprise and desktop communications infrastructure," said Sanjay Sharma, chief strategy officer for Ample Communications. "Extending our expertise to the PCIExpress platform will allow Ample Communications to provide next-generation, high-performance, highly-efficient solutions for these applications."

"PCIExpress technology will enable highly efficient I/O Interconnects across computing and communications platforms," said Jim Pappas, director of initiative marketing for Intel's Enterprise Platform Group. "Communications interconnects represent a leading application for PCIExpress performance with 1 Gbps adapters emerging on client platforms and 10 Gbps technology poised for entry in data center environments. Availability of PCIExpress enabled Ethernet adapters is a critical element to the delivery of PCIExpress enabled solution delivery next year."
