XO Communications Completes Next Generation Nationwide Inter-City Fiber Optic Network

Posted on: Monday, 9 October 2006, 09:00 CDT

RESTON, Va., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- XO Communications today announced that it has completed its new next generation nationwide inter-city fiber optic network and is now carrying customer traffic across all segments. XO has also begun deploying additional capacity upgrades along major routes on the network in response to customer demand. The XO network represents one of the industry's most advanced deployments of digital optical technology and allows XO to more than double network capacity and offer a broader range of higher-speed data transport services to content providers, enterprises and service providers.

"Our new next generation network represents a major competitive advantage for XO in providing nationwide and metro network services to carriers, cable companies, large enterprises and service providers," said Ernie Ortega, president of carrier services at XO Communications. "Demand for high bandwidth services is increasing as organizations converge all forms of commerce, communications and content over IP-based networks to serve ever increasing customer needs. Our new network not only meets the capacity needs of these organizations but also offers the nationwide reach and local presence for the door-to-door delivery of data traffic."

The new XO long haul network initially delivers 100 Gigabit per second (Gbps) of capacity and sets the stage for a ten-fold capacity increase up to 400 Gbps between any two cities on the XO inter-city network. The increased capacity enables XO to deliver 10 Gbps high speed transport services to meet the increased bandwidth needs of businesses and wholesale customers. In addition, with the deployment of digital optical technology, XO will be able to provision or upgrade customer circuits in a matter of hours versus days.

The XO nationwide inter-city network spans 18,000 route miles connecting 75 major metropolitan markets across the United States including:

* Atlanta * Houston * Phoenix * Austin * Kansas City * Pittsburgh * Baltimore * Las Vegas * Portland * Boston * Los Angeles * Raleigh * Charlotte * Memphis * Sacramento * Chicago * Miami * St. Louis * Cincinnati * Minneapolis/St. Paul * Salt Lake City * Cleveland * Nashville * San Antonio * Colorado Springs * New Orleans * San Diego * Columbus * New York * San Francisco * Dallas * Omaha * Seattle * Denver * Orlando * Tampa * Detroit * Philadelphia * Washington, DC

In addition to its extensive nationwide inter-city network, XO also owns 9,100 route miles, consisting of more than 1 million fiber miles, of local fiber networks in 37 metropolitan markets across the United States.
