IBM introduces new data and voice software

LOS ANGELES, June 29 (Xinhua) -- IBM, the world's largest information technology company, on Tuesday unveiled a new family of software products aimed at helping service providers deliver new data and voice applications to their customers.

IBM said its WebSphere Everyplace Service Delivery (WESD), including mobile portal, device management and telecom application server offerings, will enable service providers to cost- effectively gain access to web based applications running across virtually any network.

For example, the company said, a service provider using its new software will be able to offer location information to enterprise software developers by leveraging the location capabilities of its network.

It listed the following as possible benefits for customers:

- A company focused on emergency incident management could find the tow truck closest to a customer with a flat tire;

- Targeted weather forecasts can be generated from wherever you are;

- Retail stores in an area can be identified and an advertisement message could be sent to a customer's mobile phone based on their location and shopping preferences;

- A real estate customer searching for a house could drive through a neighborhood and automatically receive directions to the nearest homes for sale along with maps.

"All this is accomplished using standard Web service messages sent from enterprise applications to the Sprint network," a US telecom company which is using the WESD middleware, IBM said in a statement.
