NEC Electronics America to Showcase Power Management Solutions at Power Electronics Technology Conference

Posted on: Thursday, 19 October 2006, 18:00 CDT

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- NEC Electronics America, Inc. today announced it will demonstrate its low-voltage power management solutions at the Power Electronics Technology Exhibition & Conference 2006 taking place in Long Beach, California, October 24-26. The company's robust line of low-voltage power MOSFETs, noise-clipping and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection diodes and low drop-out (LDO) voltage regulators serves a wide range of applications in the automotive, consumer, computing and industrial markets. In addition, Gene Rutkevich will lead a presentation about advanced packaging technologies and UMOS gate processes as part of the conference's thermal management and packaging session.

Presentation Details Low-Voltage Technologies

Gene Rutkevich, marketing manager, standards solutions strategic business unit, will present a paper titled, "Advanced Packaging Technologies and UMOS Processes Enable New Low-Voltage Power MOSFETs with the Industry's Lowest ON-Resistance," on October 25 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in Room #523. The presentation will illustrate how advanced packaging and process technologies can enable designers to meet the stringent power consumption and size constraints required by the power management market. As the demand for smaller, more power-efficient and reliable power management devices continues to increase, designers are seeking new methods of reducing power consumption levels without compromising performance or reliability. Mr. Rutkevich will describe an approach that employs advanced packaging technology and MOS trench processes to greatly reduce MOSFET ON-resistance levels. Such MOSFETs can significantly reduce power losses, resulting in a smaller heat dissipation area.

Booth Demonstrations

NEC Electronics America will showcase several power management products that address customers' system-level design needs. Included in the product demonstrations is a low-voltage motor control evaluation kit targeting brushless DC (BLDC) motor applications. The motor control kit features the company's on-board low-voltage power module built with NEC Electronics' power MOSFETs and either an 8- or 32-bit NEC Electronics dedicated motor control microcontroller. The kit also includes a user interface module, a 12-volt (V) BLDC motor, a 15V/2 amp (A) power supply, a graphical user interface (GUI) for control algorithm tuning and the necessary reference code.

Also on display in the booth will be NEC Electronics' uPA2350 and uPA2351 power MOSFETs. Boasting the industry's smallest-in-class footprint, these devices reduce the design footprint of traditional dual N-channel MOSFETs in battery-protection applications by as much as 86 percent compared to current industry solutions, such as the 8-pin thin shrink small-outline package (TSSOP) traditionally used. The devices are ideal for use in lithium-ion battery packs for portable battery-powered consumer applications such as MP3 players, cell phones and other mobile wireless devices. The uPA2350 and uPA2351 power MOSFETs combine NEC Electronics' fourth-generation UMOS technology with a chip-on-board packaging technique that results in low on-state resistances of 28 milliohms (uPA2350) and 32 milliohms (uPA2351) to extend battery life. The devices are housed in the industry's smallest and thinnest package in their class, 1.62 millimeters (mm) square by 0.48 mm thick.
