COLUMBIA, S.C., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Unitrends Software Corp., a leader in the development of data protection products and services, today announced the availability of its new line of Data Protection Units(TM), providing small and medium-sized businesses with the widest range of fully integrated data protection available in the market today.
Unitrends' DPUs are available in desktop and rackmount configurations, beginning at less than $4,500, and are equipped with a full range of Unitrends-exclusive integrated advantages, including:
-- Award-winning, built-in DPS(TM) data protection software (integrated,
file level backup/restore and bare metal restore);
-- Quick set up and configuration;
-- Scalable, up to 20 terabytes;
-- As much as 50 percent faster than previous generations;
-- True disk-to-disk (D2D) architecture;
-- Configurable as a tapeless, disk-to-disk nearline/tape offline or
vaulted solution;
-- High performance, hardware-based data compression; and
-- Heterogeneous OS support, across 20 of today's most frequently used
business platforms.
"Unitrends' DPU delivered as advertised," said Bruce Pina, Manager of Network Technologies at Jefferson-Pilot Communications Company, based in Charlotte, NC. "Installation and operation is painless, and the hardware and software advantages that Unitrends built into the unit gives us the ability to reliably backup and restore data more quickly than we have seen in competing products. The DPU fits easily into our infrastructure, and provides us with a valuable disaster recovery solution that can grow with our data."
"In this day and age, no company of any size can afford to be without data protection. Yet, the focus of most vendors has been to woo large enterprises with the next generation disk-based backup and restore products," said Arun Taneja, industry analyst and founder of the Taneja Group. "By focusing on the SMB space, Unitrends has delivered an integrated appliance specifically designed to produce value for this segment of the market. I am impressed with what they have done."
The new line of DPUs benefits from and reflects Unitrends' experience in providing true disk-to-disk data protection and disaster recovery solutions to the marketplace. "Our third-generation DPUs make it easier and more cost- effective for companies of all sizes to gain the benefits of disk-based data protection," said Jacques McCormack, Unitrends CEO. "True D2D implementation intelligently combines the powerful transfer of data from disk to disk with the proven archiving power of tape in an intelligent fashion. Unitrends' D2D implementation prevents data from becoming stale or lost forever; it is always kept alive, compact, point-in-time presentable, and replicable."
Included in the new line of Unitrends' rackmounted DPUs is RX9(TM), the company's new high-performance data-compression technology. For the first time, RX9's compression allows the incremental cost of disk-to-disk (D2D) based storage on a per gigabyte basis to rival or be less than the cost of storing information on tape. The DPU and RX9 technology enable data backups and restores to be accomplished in a fraction of the time previously needed; very large databases (VLDBs) compiled on applications such as Oracle(R) can be backed up or restored within minutes, as opposed to the hours required using traditional tape-based backup or tape emulation methods.
RX9 technology also resolves common problems associated with using disk as a backup source such as:
-- Running out of disk space in the middle of a compression task;
-- Compression collision that occurs when compression tasks conflict with
concurrently running backup jobs;
-- Slowing backup time when multiple compression tasks are occurring; and
-- Slowing restore times due to tedious decompression of an entire backup
job before it can be restored.
Unitrends' third-generation DPUs are available in a wide range of configurations, from desktop units, capable of holding between 250 and 400GB of tapeless storage, all the way to the R5000, a 5U rackmount multiprocessor system with 9.6TB of native storage. In addition, Unitrends is also providing expansion units that can be added on to any DPU to increase total storage capacity up to 19.6 terabytes. Unitrends' DPUs can be combined with its Data Protection Vaults(TM), providing automated and secure offsite vaulting of all client data in a local site. The data is kept current and is recoverable as needed. DPVs range in capacity from one to 32 terabytes.
