Overture Networks Launches Stretch the Edge Campaign to Support Growing Ethernet Services Market

Posted on: Monday, 23 October 2006, 09:00 CDT

Overture Networks, a leading developer of converged packet access platforms, today announced that the company has launched its Stretch the Edge campaign to support the growing Ethernet retail services market. By taking advantage of Overture Networks' solutions, carriers can stretch their services, revenues, locations and customer set providing a complete market solution from 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps. Likewise, enterprises deploying their own private networks will be able to cost-effectively extend Ethernet to all of their locations with a consistent set of capabilities, services and management.

A recent report from Vertical Systems Group states that U.S. retail Business Ethernet service revenues using fiber to deliver 10 Mbps and above will reach approximately $19 billion over the next five years. It also reports that fiber only reaches about 11.7% of the business locations in the United States with more than 20 employees. The comparable figure for business locations in Europe is more than half of that percentage.

"The sub-10 Mbps market, which is largely untapped today, has a market potential of $5 Billion over the next five years," said Erin Dunne, director of research services with Vertical Systems Group. "There are hundreds of thousands of sites, both large and small, that can only be accessed by copper and this provides a significant market opportunity for Overture Networks and its customers."

Carriers and large enterprises must be able to deliver a diverse mix of bandwidth, services and applications to all locations, and the quality of these services must be consistent. Having an Ethernet solution for any location over fiber or copper enables the migration of large-scale networks connecting hundreds or thousands of sites. Further, by focusing on revenue migration, providers can be confident that current customers are satisfied when they request Ethernet services at any or all locations, assuring that the customer does not switch to another provider.

Overture Networks provides both enterprises and carriers the ability to offer Ethernet over both fiber and copper. Other benefits include:

A strong mix of platform sizes designed to support remote single customer locations, medium and large facilities, and central office locations that aggregate many sites

Extremely low-cost entry points and pay-as-you-grow aggregation solutions

Support for both packet and circuit-based services over any type of transport

Full-featured Ethernet support on all Ethernet interfaces

"One of the most challenging aspects of extending Ethernet services to more locations relates directly to the lack of fiber-based connectivity," said Chip Redden, vice president of marketing and product management at Overture Networks. "Most Ethernet service offerings in place today are delivered over simple metro networks which interconnect only a few locations. Overture Networks has created products with revenue growth in mind--designed to help providers and enterprises reach more customers and provide solutions that simplify the delivery of Ethernet services over both fiber and copper."

With customer successes such as Time Warner Telecom, Cavalier Telephone, and THUS, plc, Overture Networks' award-winning ISG family of platforms consolidate the transport and management of circuit and packet-based services onto a single system that requires minimal or no changes to the subscriber site or the provider transport infrastructure. Overture Networks' purpose-built, multi-service access platforms, support a variety of Ethernet and TDM-based services over any underlying infrastructure enabling providers to cost-effectively reach all of their customers--and offer those customers the services and applications their customers are demanding--at all locations.

"At Time Warner Telecom, we've built a comprehensive portfolio of Ethernet services recognized as industry leading," said Michael Rouleau, senior vice president of Strategy and Business Development for Time Warner Telecom. "With this additional capability from Overture Networks, we can now deliver those Ethernet solutions to enterprise customers anywhere."

Overture Networks' ISG 180 was recently named a recipient of the 2006 Internet Telephony Excellence Award. In addition, the ISG 140 and 180 products were named as finalists for the InfoVision 2006 Awards in the Access Network Technologies and Services category selected by the International Engineering Consortium (IEC) and the Broadband World Forum.
