Parvus to Unveil Mobile Internet Access Solution for Commuter Bus and Coach at BusCon 2006 in Chicago

Posted on: Monday, 23 October 2006, 09:00 CDT

Parvus Corporation will introduce its RiderNet™ passenger Internet access solution at the BusCon 2006 Expo (booth #1208) being held October 23-25 at Navy Pier, Chicago. This new mobile 802.11 hotspot solution provides bus operators a turn-key solution for bringing high-speed Internet access to commuters.

Purpose-built for the harsh vehicle environment, RiderNet is one of the first such products specifically tailored for commuter transit and private coach installations. Enabling broadband connection speeds comparable to DSL with minimal infrastructure investment by transit operators, RiderNet reliably connects wireless (802.11) subscribers to a high-speed cellular backhaul at speeds averaging 400-700kbps (with bursts up to 2Mbps).

Considered by Parvus to be the most robust and affordable wireless Internet access solution available today for transit vehicles, RiderNet helps mass transit authorities increase their ridership by enhancing the productivity of their business commuters. Passengers can check email, visit websites, and use VPN connections from any Wi-Fi-enabled laptop or PDA. Multiple business models are supported including free, pay-per-use, and subscription service to add-value and/or generate additional revenue for transit operators.

The product comes with all the equipment needed for hassle-free installation and operation, including wireless router, broadband modem, vehicle power supply, antennas, and cabling. All RiderNet™ deployments are managed by Parvus through standard monthly service agreements. Parvus monitors and tracks all fielded systems and can perform first-level troubleshooting remotely from the Parvus Network Operations Center (NOC) in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Advanced options for the RiderNet solution include:

RADIUS AAA: Industry standard authentication and user tracking

Priority Ethernet Port: High or low priority for on-board AVL/DVR system connection

802.11 Client Interface: Connect to depot networks for downloading video/data from DVR/vehicle logic units

Managed content filtering

Custom Splash Pages: Walled garden capability for branding and surveys

Remote Management: Optional web interface and syslog monitoring

Customer Care and Revenue Reporting: Traffic and usage reports

The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) announced earlier this month that it has deployed the Parvus RiderNet solution on its commuter bus line serving passengers between Ogden and Salt Lake City.
