Tenaga Unable to Confirm Venture With Asiaspace

TENAGA Nasional Bhd can't confirm if its fibre optic unit, Fibrecomm Sdn Bhd, is in talks with Asiaspace DotCom Sdn Bhd to form a strategic alliance to allow the utility's unit to venture into the information and communications technology business.

"There are some activities in Fibrecomm, but I can't confirm if there are talks with Asiaspace or any other parties," Tenaga's corporate communications senior manager Syed Hidzam told Mail Money.

A business daily had reported that Tenaga was to sign an agreement with Asiaspace to enable Fibrecomm to offer broadband services to paying customers.

"We are still waiting for the management to announce a decision on the matter," said Syed Hidzam.

Tenaga is 81 per cent owned by the Government, while Asiaspace is controlled by millionaire Datuk Abdul Ghani Abdullah, who has a legal office in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.

Asiaspace in one of 29 companies which owns a network facilities provider (NFP) licence.

The Tenaga unit had previously applied for a licence but the application was rejected by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

Without the NFP licence, Tenaga nor its unit will be able to fully utilise its 5,200km of fibre optic network which is used internally to link Tenagas 160 offices nationwide for broadband communications, data transfer, wide area network Intranet.
