Time Warner Telecom Delivers Metro Ethernet Data Network to Central Piedmont Community College

Posted on: Wednesday, 7 July 2004, 06:00 CDT

CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Time Warner Telecom , a leading provider of managed voice and data networking solutions for businesses in Charlotte and 43 other U.S. metro areas, today announced the installation of metro Ethernet Native LAN data services to Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) of Charlotte. Central Piedmont College cited superior value, reliability and scalability in awarding Time Warner Telecom the 3-year contract for Native Local Area Network (LAN) services.

"Time Warner Telecom emerged from our bid process as the greatest value for service in every category," said Jeff Thornburg, supervisor -- networks and infrastructure, for Central Piedmont Community College. "We increased our capacity 11-fold, at a reduced cost compared to our legacy T1 infrastructure. The SONET-based service delivery gives us the reliability we must have to meet communication service level agreements between four of our campus locations. And when our current capacity is reached, all I have to do is make a phone call to add more. I like the fact that the Ethernet handoff eliminates the need to deploy and maintain costly equipment."

Time Warner Telecom designed a solution to meet CPCC's requirements, including 100 Mbps point-to-point Native LAN service between the school's Central and Levine locations and point-to-multipoint 10 Mbps Native LAN service between CPCC's Central, Northeast, Southwest and West campus locations.

The addition of new campus buildings, hundreds of network workstations and a substantial increase in the use of the Internet in classroom and distance learning applications required the significant expansion of bandwidth.

One of CPCC's primary focuses is to provide students a consistent instructional experience at all campuses. A student attending a class at one college campus could access the same technology services from any other location.

"Students taking classes at Central campus want to complete assignments at another campus close to their home or workplace," said Celese Ward, manager -- instructional technology services at CPCC. "We can now deliver this."

"Time Warner Telecom's large-capacity networks have been a key enabler for this ubiquitous access and services consolidation," added Thornburg. "With this greater bandwidth it is now feasible for us to roll out multi-media enhanced instruction and communications between the campuses."

Time Warner Telecom is able to provide complete network solutions, with nearly 1,000 route mile of local fiber network in the Charlotte area alone, to meet the extremely large capacity requirements of enterprises and educational institutions like CPCC. Because its extensive local fiber networks in Charlotte, Rockingham, Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, Fayetteville, Greensboro, High Point, Thomasville, Winston-Salem, and Burlington, are connected with regional fiber, Time Warner Telecom is able to offer unsurpassed state-wide network services to North Carolina's high-tech customer base.

"Central Piedmont Community College's voracious demand for bandwidth isn't surprising given that they are one of the nation's largest community colleges," said Bob Senn, vice president and general manager for Time Warner Telecom in Charlotte. "However, this need underscores the trend that is happening at institutions across the United States. Distance learning solutions are becoming more popular and mainstream. Moreover, the Internet is increasingly being used in classroom settings to deliver web-based content. Together with the deployment of new applications, colleges require greater bandwidth than many of their legacy networks currently provide."

Time Warner Telecom's Native LAN service has been designated a Cisco Powered Network service, signifying that this service is built around Cisco's industry leading technology.
