EarthLink Calls on FCC to Protect Consumer Freedoms As Merger Comments Period Comes to a Close
Posted on: Tuesday, 24 October 2006, 09:00 CDT
ATLANTA, Oct. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The following statement regarding the FCC's pending consideration of the AT&T-BellSouth merger is attributable to Chris Putala, executive vice president, public policy, EarthLink .
"On Tuesday, the FCC public comment period will close. As the Commissioners reach the final stages of their decision on this merger, we encourage them to continue their strong commitment to maintaining a vibrant and competitive marketplace.
"Crucial to that open marketplace is stand-alone, or 'naked' DSL service. More choice means more competition and more consumer freedom.
"Over the last few years the mega-players in Telecom have only grudgingly offered stand-alone service. In some cases, stand-alone service has been priced to discourage people from obtaining it. Some would argue that such offerings were not made in good faith, but rather to keep consumers tied to the same old phone service offered by the same old phone company.
"We urge the FCC to offer clear merger conditions for stand-alone service and take a strong position in favor of consumer freedom."
