Bail was set Wednesday at $250,000 for the retired University of Nevada, Las Vegas music professor accused of downloading more than 26,000 child pornography images on electronic devices.
Richard Soule surrendered himself Tuesday in front of the Clark County Detention Center, after university police issued a search warrant on his office and home and found the contraband.
Soule’s attorney, Conrad Claus, said he’s unlikely to post such a high bail, which he described as unwarranted because Soule, 62, has no criminal history and has been cooperative with authorities.
Claus said Soule has been married for 37 years, raised a family and has served his community, he said.
Conrad Hafen, chief deputy attorney general, said Soule was a flight risk because of the seriousness of the offense and the attention it has warranted from media. He had to surrender his passport, he said.
Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Ann Zimmerman set the bail.
