Intelligent Optical Systems Teams With Japanese Think Tank to Combat Chemical, Biological Threats in U.S. And Japan

Intelligent Optical Systems (IOS), a leading Los Angeles-based technology company, has entered into a joint agreement with the Institute for Future Technology (IFTECH), a non-profit think tank in Tokyo, to explore technology that protects the U.S. and Japan from chemical and biological threats. The partnership was signed last week and witnessed by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa during his East Asia trip.
"IFTECH is one of the foremost think tanks in the world that advises Japan's federal government as well as works closely with the Tokyo government. This is a tremendous opportunity for Los Angeles and IOS to be working with them," said John Farina, CEO of IOS.
IFTECH and IOS, which develops optical sensing and analytical instrumentation, will work together to examine technology options that can protect against the release of hazardous materials in or near specific buildings, transportation lines and other critical city infrastructure.
The organizations will explore the use of IOS's DICAST® system. DICAST® is a fiber optic-sensing technology that overcomes the limitations of older technologies which rely on point-to-point electronic sensors or laser detection that requires a clear line of sight. The DICAST® system was developed primarily under the auspices of the U.S. Department of Defense and has had significant Congressional funding. The system is currently configured to analyze ambient air and detect the presence of multiple toxic gases. "Ultimately, we will be outlining positive solutions that make use of the latest technology to minimize the impact of this type of potential threat in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and throughout both countries," continued Farina.
