Virtela Communications Delivers Asia-U.S. Managed Enterprise Network for Pixelworks
Posted on: Tuesday, 13 July 2004, 06:00 CDT
DENVER, July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Virtela Communications Inc., a global network solutions company, today announced that Pixelworks, Inc., a leading provider of system-on-chip ICs for the advanced display market, is using Virtela's managed private networking services to connect its locations in China and Taiwan with its U.S. corporate offices. The fully managed, fully redundant network has significantly improved network performance and reliability over previously used service provider solutions.
Pixelworks' solutions are used by the world's leading manufacturers of consumer electronics and computer displays to enhance image quality and ease of use. The company was attracted to Virtela's unique ability to provide consistently high performance and dedicated bandwidth in and out of China, one of the world's most challenging telecommunications markets, opening the door to business-quality enterprise voice and video over IP communications. Virtela's IP Service Fabric (IPSF(SM)) infrastructure exploits proprietary algorithms that intelligently route customer traffic via the best-performing path over multiple carrier networks, providing the highest end-to-end performance and availability worldwide.
For Pixelworks' international communications, Virtela has proven to consistently deliver unparalleled performance of less than 250 milliseconds (ms) latency, less than 1% packet loss, and less than 5ms of jitter. By comparison, on any given day, traditional VPNs to China can waiver between 300 and 1200ms latency and up to 50% packet loss, making them unusable for most wide area network (WAN) applications.
"The simplicity of Virtela's managed service approach, their accommodating attitude during the troubleshooting and setup phase and the consistency and redundancy of the solution, were all very attractive aspects for us," said James Levis, IT director at Pixelworks. "Virtela has proven to be a good balance of flexibility, responsiveness, and consistency. All traits that will serve us well if we expand further into Asia-Pac."
The Pixelworks network includes primary E1 and T1 connections with dynamic DSL back-up links in China and Taiwan. Even with the completely redundant design of the network, Pixelworks is saving significantly on its monthly network costs had it elected to implement traditional solutions such as Frame Relay or Private Line. Additionally, Virtela delivered circuits within 45 days as opposed to the more common three to six-month turn-up for traditional U.S.-based carriers. The Virtela network cleanly fit with the existing VPN architecture used by Pixelworks and required minimal changes during the transition away from their previous service providers.
Virtela provides one stop shopping for implementation and management of local network access via relationships with more than 200 access providers worldwide. A dedicated project manager handles the process from end-to-end, from provisioning and monitoring to integrated billing and support. Virtela's multilingual Network Operations Center provides expert 24x7 support around the world.
"On top of improving performance for their bread and butter enterprise applications, such as email and file transfers, Pixelworks now has a foundation for next generation applications which will enhance their competitive edge," said Vab Goel, Virtela's chairman and partner at Norwest Venture Partners. "As a result of outsourcing to Virtela, Pixelworks benefits from a tailored solution that meets their stringent requirements, greatly improves their end user experience and raises the technology bar for the rest of the manufacturing sector."
Virtela VPN is the foundation on which Virtela delivers its comprehensive suite of network, security and application solutions. Key to its service-oriented and consultative approach, Virtela augments its core offerings with value-added capabilities such as network architecture and security policy consulting, design and implementation, including provisioning and on-site installation.
