AudioCodes(TM) Selects Motorola Network Processor for Its Next-Generation Voice Over Packet Media Gateway Solutions

Posted on: Tuesday, 30 September 2003, 06:00 CDT

SAN JOSE, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- COMMUNICATIONS DESIGN CONFERENCE -- The Motorola, Inc. C-5e(TM) network processor has been chosen by AudioCodes Ltd. to perform packet forwarding in the company's next-generation high-density media gateway solutions. By using the C-5e network processor, AudioCodes is able to provide its customers with a diverse range of flexible voice-over-packet products that are leading the transition to converged voice and data communications networks.

"The C-5e network processor is an ideal building block that enables AudioCodes to offer highly integrated media gateway technology to our customers and partners," said Eli Nir, vice president of R&D for AudioCodes. "The flexible C-5e architecture is suitable for various AudioCodes product lines including high-density Voice over IP (VoIP) gateways, Voice over ATM (VoATM) gateways, 3G gateways, and media servers."

The C-5e network processor architecture comprises 16 fully-programmable RISC cores that can support virtually any protocol, including ATM AAL-2/AAL-5, VoIP/Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP)/User Datagram Protocol (UDP), Packet-over-SONET/Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), and Multi-protocol Label Switching (MPLS). Interworking between IP and ATM, such as switching within and between RTP and AAL-2 flows, can be achieved easily with the C-5e network processor architecture.

"The C-Ware Software Toolset, which is used to program the C-5e, has helped accelerate our development process," added Nir. "The reference applications, in particular, have helped us understand the processor's capabilities, and we have been able to reuse the reference code in our own applications."

The AudioCodes media gateway solutions range from media gateway blades within CompactPCI(R) or PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC) form factors to complete high-availability media gateway platforms. The C-5e network processor's integrated Ethernet Media Access Controllers (MACs), SONET framers, and classification coprocessor help to minimize board space and lower total board-level costs in these designs. The AudioCodes products also use the Motorola MPC8265 containing a PowerPC(R) core as the host processor working with the C-5e network processor.
