NTT Com, BT, 4 Others Form Assn. For Fixed-Mobile Convergence

Posted on: Wednesday, 14 July 2004, 06:00 CDT

Tokyo, July 14 (Jiji Press)--Japan's NTT Communications Corp., BT Group of Britain and four other leading telecommunications carriers have set up an association to promote fixed and mobile phone convergence services, NTT Communications said Wednesday.

Established on Tuesday, the Fixed-Mobile Convergence Alliance will prod manufacturers into accelerated development of mobile terminals and communications equipment for fixed-mobile convergence services.

The alliance will also consider ways to allow mobile phone users to call from indoors at inexpensive prices by connecting mobile phones to fixed line networks in homes and offices.

Other participants are KT Corp. of South Korea, Brasil Telecom of Brazil, Swisscom of Switzerland and Canada's Roger Wireless Inc.

An NTT Communications spokesman said that the company has joined the alliance with the aim of collecting information and has no concrete plans for the launch of new services. The company is a long- distance telecom unit of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. .END
