AT&T Corp. announced yesterday that the company has begun offering Voice over Internet Protocol service in the Richmond area.
Richmond is among 28 new markets where AT&T offers the service, bringing the total to 100 markets in 29 states and Washington.
A customer must have a high-speed, broadband Internet connection, either cable modem or DSL. AT&T says it can be installed in 10 minutes using a regular phone and a plug-in adapter provided by AT&T.
The service is being offered at an introductory six-month rate of $19.99, after which it will go to the full-retail rate of $34.99 per month. It covers local calling and unlimited domestic long-distance calling, including calls to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
AT&T says its adapter is compatible with most home computer networks and can be used with home network routers. The adapter can be used from most any site with a broadband connection.
The service includes features such as call logs; "do not disturb" to receive calls only when wanted; and "locate me," which rings five phones at once or sequentially.
