Online Media Demand for Video Fuels Growth at The NewsMarket
Posted on: Tuesday, 7 November 2006, 09:00 CST
Rapid uptake of digital video in online and broadcast newsrooms has helped The NewsMarket (www.thenewsmarket.com) surpass 10,000 registered media outlets on its site, the company said today. Half of the 10,000 outlets are US-based, with the rest being from Europe, Asia and Latin America.
The company also announced the appointment of Andrew Heyward to its board. Heyward, an award-winning producer and executive producer, spent almost 25 years at CBS News. He was President, CBS News, from January 1996 to November 2005 -- the second longest tenure in the News division's history. During that time, CBS News programming grew significantly in audience, regularly scheduled hours and profitability. Heyward played a key role in CBS News' move into new media. Its award-winning website, CBSNews.com, was an early leader in providing free, advertiser-supported broadband video. Heyward is currently a senior advisor to Marketspace LLC, a strategic advisory firm that is part of the Monitor Group.
"As The NewsMarket enters its next phase of development, Andrew's addition to our board gives us unparalleled insight and experience into the challenges faced by the global news industry," says Shoba Purushothaman, CEO & Co-founder of The NewsMarket. "He will be invaluable in helping us build on our leadership in the changing media landscape."
The increase in The NewsMarket's user base was marked by a sharp rise in the number of online media now looking for video content to include in their news reports. The percentage of media taking video digitally has also soared to 85% from less than 25% in early 2005. Additionally, the number of orders from online news sites has tripled to 30%, from less than 10% a year ago.
"We're seeing explosive growth in demand for video from non-broadcast outlets, which now make up 48%, or nearly half, of the media outlets registered with us," says Purushothaman. "The long-anticipated convergence in the media world is finally happening, with video proving to be a big accelerator."
The NewsMarket's platform offers journalists in 144 countries access to video content from brands such as Google, Microsoft, Pfizer, adidas, General Motors, UNICEF, FedEx, Dell, American Red Cross, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and many others. Some of the new clients using The NewsMarket to distribute corporate video in recent months include Delta Airlines, Wynn Resorts, the Williams Formula 1 team and Novo Nordisk.
