Samsung Selects the CollabNet Environment to Develop Next-Generation Home Network Solutions
Posted on: Monday, 19 July 2004, 06:00 CDT
CollabNet, the leading provider of on demand collaborative software development solutions, today announced that Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has purchased the CollabNet(R) environment to enhance collaboration and increase efficiencies among developers of its next-generation Home Network Solutions.
Samsung's Home Network Solutions offer integral monitoring and control of home devices combined with associated on-line services. The CollabNet environment is helping Samsung create a collaborative development process so that its software teams can work together effectively across the entire product development lifecycle.
"Launching the Home Network Solutions is a formidable task. Proper integration of many components and ensuring product quality is critical for a newly launched product," noted Dr. HiSup Park, Vice President, System Solution Group, Digital Solution Center (DSC). "We strive for simplicity and direct benefit to the end user, yet developing these products is often very complex due to changing market requirements and the diversity of interdependent components associated with our products. The CollabNet environment enables our highly matrixed activities to proceed in parallel while maintaining control over the myriad requirements, documents, source codes, defects, and fixes. By implementing the CollabNet solution, our developers have a uniform code-sharing capability across our product line, version control, plus auditing features that result in higher productivity and quality control across the entire development community. It also has been instrumental in conducting a full-scale testing and debugging operation on our entire Home Network System over our very aggressive product release schedule."
For companies like Samsung with globally distributed operations, the CollabNet environment provides a secure and cost-effective means for collaborative development. Geographical expansion also poses new technology challenges for developers as the use of wide-area networks (WANs) become more prevalent in most large enterprises, but many software development environments are designed for local-area networks. This introduces a host of problems, such as latency, security, and TCO issues that are adversely impacting the effectiveness of distributed development. The CollabNet environment helps mitigate these challenges by integrating applications for software development, project management, knowledge management, and communication management in a single, unified environment that is controlled through a Web-based project workspace with a centralized role-based permissions model.
"We are very pleased that Samsung DSC, an industry leader with a commitment to innovation, has selected the CollabNet environment as its platform for collaborative software development," commented Steve Tsuchiyama, General Manager Asia-Pacific Operations at CollabNet. "Samsung DSC and other leading companies across the Asia-Pacific region continue to embrace the CollabNet environment as the platform of choice for globally distributed software development," concluded Tsuchiyama.
The CollabNet environment unites IT and business functions by giving developers, executives, and managers real-time visibility into the software development process so they can track progress made throughout the application development lifecycle. This increased process predictability allows teams to easily share information during the development process to help mitigate business risks and better track ROI indicators.
"Samsung Digital Solution Center's decision to select CollabNet as its key provider of collaborative software development solutions demonstrates how enterprises can adopt a new breed of solutions to help them boost productivity and operate more efficiently on a global, distributed scale," said Ken Comee, Vice President of Field Operations at CollabNet. "This efficiency is realized through our on demand, Web-based solutions that give DSC executives, managers, and developers keen insight into their numerous software development projects. With CollabNet, users gain greater visibility into project status, issue resolution, and tasks assigned to project members. As a result, they are better able to determine and allocate resources for various projects and can help drive ROI."
About Samsung's Home Network Systems
The Samsung Home Network Systems connect the core system of servers, plus a set of network and control devices to home appliances and devices.
